Installing Brother Printer(SOLVED)
« on: June 06, 2016, 12:34:57 pm »
Hello Peppermint people, I am trying to install an older(10 years) Brother MFC 420CN printer into my system. This was a really good printer for me until the printhead plugged. Well, I found a source for new printheads so I would like to get it connected. I followed instructions as described here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=590793, which were very good and easy to follow and I can send print jobs to the printer successfully. The problem is with the scanner. When I try to scan I get these errors

And when I check scanner status I get this

Code: [Select]
albert@albert-desktop ~ $ sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

could not open USB device 0x04f9/0x0162 at 005:003: Access denied (insufficient permissions)

The last device listed is the printer/scanner

The above mentioned instructions were not for Ubuntu 14.04 and a google search  did not result with any 14.04 specific help, as far as I looked. Any ideas? Thanks guys

Hi guys, upon further investigation, I found that the error code was an indication that the scanner didn't have the correct permissions as indicated in this discussion:

That was about the easiest problem fix I've come across, well almost. Thanks anyway  ;D
