Laptop no longer recognising my nvidia gpu. (Solved)
« on: May 11, 2016, 02:43:59 am »
So the other day I decided to try the nvidia driver rather then the nouveau one, i changed it back and stupidly ran some purge nvidia comand....
Now the computer no longer regocnises my gpu and is only using intergrated graphics.
I've tried everything i can think of including reinstalling windows to use the original driver disc, but when i try to install the driver it says there is no compatible hardware.

I'm really hoping someone can help me out, and yes I know I'm an idiot n00b who has learnt their lesson on stuffing around with things that don't need it...

You probably have something left from the proprietary driver.  (happened to me last time I did this)  Go into the Synaptic Package Manager and make sure that ALL things Nvidia 340, 352, etc are removed.  Then exit Synaptic, and go to:

Menu > Preferences > Additional Drivers

Make sure "Using X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (open source)" is selected.

It may do some stuff, wait for it to finish and then reboot.  You should be good to go.  If not, we'll have to get more advanced with this.

Anything nvdia I have found in synaptic package manager can only be marked for installation every other option is greyed out, this is also the case  for anything xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and the boxes for everything are white.
Nothing at all shows up in additional drivers.

HM, you must have  uninstalled whatever the system had that allowed it to identify the GPU.  Unfortunately, I don't know what that is and I'm not at home right now to check it out. So, somebody else is going to have to help you.  (That or you reinstall Peppermint, which I'm assuming you don't want to do)

I've already tried reinstalling peppermint, and no worries it's getting quite late where I am anyway.

It sounds like you uninstalled the nvidia drivers, if you couldn't remember exactly what you did I suppose you could have gone back in the terminal history (assuming you purged from the terminal ) to identify what it was you purged and then just re-installed

That possibly would have worked but if you've completely re-installed Peppermint then that should fix it nonetheless

I reinstalled but it hasn't helped, I probably should have added that in my last post.
I am also regretting that, because I did I can't show my history now which would have helped I'm sure.

That's weird a full re-install should have fixed that issue I would have thought

So what happens when you click Menu > Preferences > Additional Drivers

What drivers are you offered if any ?

Have you updated the system since you re-installed

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
then try Additional Drivers again

Well i just booted in again and.....I now have a black screen and something about searching for btrfs.
I can't continue now though as it is very late but thanks for the suggestions so far and I'll check in again tomorrow.

I had updated but via the manager though and it showed nothing in additional drivers.

Hi Permless,

Usually waiting for a while (when the boot screen says searching for btrfs) will result in the boot finally continuing to completion (I cannot say how long to wait, but usually this is accomplished within 2-3 minutes at the most). Then, assuming that you are not using btrfs in your Peppermint hard disk partitions, you can remove the package btrfs-tools (using the Synaptic package manager which is included and installed by default in all Peppermint installations) and this search will no longer take place in future boots (and the boot will finish much more quickly).

Regards,

Ok so I have the system booting properly again with a fresh install and updates, same problems.
So nothing in additional drivers and when I search synaptic package manager for nvidia I got a long list with all boxes being white and the only option is mark for install.
Except for three things which are green or i assume installed.
ubuntu-drivers-common 1:0.2.91.11,
libvdpau1 0.7-1ubuntu0.1,
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-lts-utopic

And thanks Alex ☺

If this helps I THINK this is what I typed in the terminal before my problems
dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*

Yeah I wait long enough and I've tried to add a screen shot but not sure I've done it right...

Hopefully this works
