USB SoundBlaster HD - microphone not working (Workaround)
« on: May 08, 2016, 04:12:46 pm »
Hello,

I can't get my microphone to work on Peppermint 6, works in Windows. I'm using a USB SoundBlaster HD Soundcard.
PulseAudio shows no movement, channel "USB Sound Blaster HD Analog Stereo" is always silent ("Monitor of USB ... Stereo" works like it should and gives the Output as Input)

I tried changing the volume for left and right seperatly using alsamixer, but it's still not working.

If I press F2 (System-Information) I get this:

/proc/asound/version

You need to a member of audio group. I'm pretty sure this should be OK by default, but you never know. Type groups into terminal to see if you're a member. If not:
Code: [Select]
sudo adduser YourUserName audio
Some (more exotic) USB devices require the user to be a member of the dialout group, although I never had to do that for an audio device. It is standard practice for USB to Serial converters for example.
Code: [Select]
sudo adduser YourUserName dialout
logout/login again after one of these commands and give it a try.
If you like Linux, raise your hand. If you don't, raise your standards.

If you go to

menu > Sound & Video > PulseAudio Volume Control

now select the "Configuration" tab

set the internal card to OFF

Does audio now work from the USB audio card ?

If not, try what's in this posting:
https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,1891.msg30115.html#msg30115

but you'll need to remove that .asoundrc file and reboot to switch back to the internal card

No, had done that already (forgot to mention this). I needed to do that to get the Output working...

Output is working, Input is not.

Didn't see your edit, will do this...

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
aplay -l
Then you'd want to adjust the "card n" line in ~/.asoundrc accordingly...

So if "aplay -l" suggests your USB sound card is "card 2" .. you'd want to try
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.asoundrc
and make it read
Code: [Select]
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 2
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 2
}
save and reboot

What happens if you load the snd-usb-audio module:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe snd-usb-audio
any sound from the USB sound card ?

if not, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]

No sound, but I get sound when I watch a video for example. It's just the microphone thats not working.

Thanks for you're efforts Capivara and PCNetSpec, although it's still not working I learned some things.

I'm doing a workaround know, ordered a cheap little soundcard to use it for the Mic (I don't like the Onboard one, it has always some background noise, even if the Mic isn't plugged in).

No problem Timo, sorry we couldn't get it working but we're all uber busy with the Peppermint 7 beta testing at the moment.

Who knows, maybe it'll work in Peppermint 7

Yeah I did a lot of reading and it looks like the soundcard was fully supported in ubuntu 10 - 12, there was a time it was completely unsupported, now it has sound, but no recording.... It might be fully supported again sometime in the future, at least the ALSA-team wanted to bring X-Fi support (and my sound is working, which has higher priority than the recording, they probably focused on this first).
