Deepin DE Alongside Peppermint? [Abandonado]
« on: April 26, 2016, 09:32:04 am »
To those in Peppermint who like to tinker with our fun little distribution here, I ask this question within this post.

Is there a simple way to add Deepin DE alongside our standard Peppermint 6 installation?

Leon8200, some time back, showed me a simple way to install Xfce alongside Peppermint,  And honestly, what I came up with, after applying Leon8200's instructions, was every bit as good --if not better-- than Xubuntu 14.04 itself.  And although his instructions were very, very simple to apply, I'm certain it is not easy to come up with such a simple set of instructions.

My concern here with Deepin is that it has moved away from the GNOME shell to HTML5 (something I know very little about).  And Deepin DE has also moved away from Ubuntu to Debian Unstable.  murraymint, kindly, had found this link for me below:

https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-install-Deepin-DE-on-Ubuntu-15-04

I don't think this is quite what I'm looking for however.  Here's an example of the type of instructions I am looking for.  These are the instructions for putting Xfce alongside Peppermint.  All credit for these instructions, I insist, go to Leon8200 --not me.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-panelNow how's that for simplicity?!!!!  ;)

Would there be any instructions similar to the instructions above which could help me run a Deepin version of Peppermint alongside our standard Peppermint installation?

Thank you,

perknh

[T]here are a lot of people happily running Peppermint ICE which hasn't been receiving ANY updates for a while now .. and I personally would STILL consider that MUCH more secure than any version of Windows with up-to-date AV/Anti-malware ;)

You could try this:
http://linoxide.com/ubuntu-how-to/install-deepin-desktop-environment-derivatives-ubuntu/

but don't blame me if it breaks stuff .. and it'll be the 14.04 version which may not be the latest

Their instructions .. please be aware I have NOT tested these, and cannot support them (or any damage they cause to your Peppermint installation)
Code: [Select]
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://packages.linuxdeepin.com/deepin trusty main non-free universe" >> /etc/apt/sources.list'then

Code: [Select]

Just kidding!  :D

I don't want to leave Peppermint in order to try this.  Deepin DE appears to be installing right now as I write this.  Throughout this installation process I have been given WARNINGS galore, and I've successfully managed to ignore every one of them too!  I imagine zebedeeboss has been given the same.  This is clearly a different experience than installing our beloved Xfce cousin --but it's fun.  :)

Thank you, PCNetSpec.  See all of you soon...I hope.  ;)

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
dde-meta-core : Depends: startdde but it is not going to be installed
Depends: deepin-desktop-environment but it is not going to be installed
Depends: dde-control-center but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

They appear to be in their repo, so try
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install dde-meta-core deepin-desktop-environment dde-control-centerand add any others it warns about to that command

your other option would be to see if aptitude can provide a solution
Code: [Select]
sudo aptitude install -s dde-meta-corefor a simulated run .. and it should tell you what it would install

Thank you, PCNetSpec, and zebedeeboss.  ;)

And this is what I get:

I keep running into a progression of unmet dependencies --apparently ad infinitum--and with no current installation candidates!

zebedeeboss, I'd be happy if I could create a Frankenstein right now!  ;D

PCNetSpec, thank you for all of your effort here.  I know DDE is not your cup of tea.  I am curious, however, why Deepin Desktop Environment is such a tough DE to install.  :-\

Okay, try letting aptitude do the work
Code: [Select]
sudo aptitude install dde-meta-core

Thank you, PCNetSpec ...will do!

I'm in the process of reformatting the hard drive right now.  Should I run the first set of commands you gave me before I run this final command, or should I begin with this final command alone?

I'm writing right now from a flash drive that contains P6 while it is reformatting the hard drive.

Thank you,

perknh

Remember to install aptitude first, if this is a fresh reinstall. Quite curious to see how this turns out  :)

Hi murraymint,

So would you try running this final command first (aptitude) and then run the first command at the beginning of this thread, or would you just run with this final aptitude command, and see what it does by itself alone?  I don't want to mess things up by mistake.

Thank you,

perknh

Hi perknh

You'll need to
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install aptitudebefore you can use aptitude.

Otherwise, do it in the order given.

Me too.  It's sounds really interesting.  I see Deepin mentioned a lot lately, although I've not really taken the time to look at it.  This customisation has got my curiosity going  ;).

If you're starting from scratch on a fresh peppermint installation, you'll need to follow all my original instructions but in the 2 commands that contain "apt-get install" replace that with "aptitude install"

but as people suggest, you'll FIRST need to install aptitude:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install aptitude

Correct me if I'm wrong.  Isn't it advisable to ONLY use aptitude after you've used it?  I read somewhere that mixing apt and aptitude can cause all kinds of dependency issues  :-\.
