[SOLVED] Trying to wipe the SSD. grub rescue>
« on: April 06, 2016, 04:31:34 am »
---------------------------------------
* Post-solved edit. * Was in fact a CD issue, not a formatting issue.
---------------------------------------

Hi,

I am trying to wipe my SSD clean so I can dual boot XP and Peppermint. From what I've read, the best procedure is to wipe the drive, install XP, then install Peppermint "alongside" XP.

I have tried to use Gparted to format the SSD (single partition) to both FAT32 and "unallocated". However when I boot the system and try to load the Windows installation CD, it says :
Quote
error: no such partition.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

Does this mean that Grub wasn't wiped from the drive?

The CD seems to be in working order (I can navigate the files etc). I'm not sure why it is seeking "Grub rescue" rather than loading the Windows installation.  :(

There is no other HDD on the system, just a single SSD.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Candy Cane

It sounds like you PC is trying to boot from the SSD instead of the Windows CD

You'll have to go into the BIOS and set the boot order for the CD drive as the first boot device or invoke the Boot Menu during startup and select the CD Drive, it should then boot from the Windows CD and start the installation process

Good luck

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs then you're not quite grasping the situation

Thanks for the help  :)

The problem was in fact the Windows CD. Even though I could navigate the CD directories and open txt files, it wasn't booting for some reason. Perhaps the CD is old and worn.

The solution for me was to use create an .iso image and install from a new disc.  8)
