Kernel update to 3.13.0-83 generic breaks boot
« on: March 31, 2016, 11:54:33 am »
Just did an update to the kernel mentioned above, and it seems to have broken LVM support. On boot I get dropped into the initramfs command line with:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
  - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
  - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mapper/peppermint--vg-root does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

Booting the -79 ver. kernel works fine.

Ideas?
TIA!
Bill

you have 2 options here

a) mark the previous kernel as the default
or
b) try upgrading your kernel to the 4.2 series from 14.04.4 via the LTS Enablement stack

If you need assistance, just let us know which route you want to go.

Okay, can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a

Here you go:

Code: [Select]
Linux yuuko 3.13.0-79-generic #123-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 19 14:28:32 UTC 2016 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
This is the latest that will boot.

This is Peppermint 5 32bit right ?

If so, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-wily xserver-xorg-core-lts-wily xserver-xorg-lts-wily xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-wily xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-wily libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-wily(be sure to get all that command as it scrolls of the page on this forum)

Once that command completes, REBOOT.  <-- IMPORTANT

Once rebooted, come back here and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a

OK, all that ran w/o error, but upon reboot, same issue with the 4.2 kernel.

Maybe I need to mod the kernel (make menuconfig, etc.)?

Code: [Select]
gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfgand the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -land

When you see this:

ALERT! /dev/mapper/peppermint--vg-root does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

if you type exit and hit enter .. does the PC boot ?

Hi txGeek,

Boot into your 3.13.0-79 kernel (or whatever one is working). Now run those last commands again but with a little modification (adding -v), like this:

Code: [Select]
sudo update-initramfs -c -v -k 3.13.0-83-generic
and

Code: [Select]
sudo update-initramfs -c -v -k 4.2.0-34-generic
Then tell us (or post here if possible) the output for each. Also, open a terminal and enter this:

Code: [Select]
cd /boot
press enter and then post the output from this command:

Code: [Select]
ls -lhaF
