Install will not run without USB in
« on: March 24, 2016, 10:55:59 am »
I'm struggling to install Peppermint 6 onto a machine. It has installed, but will not boot with nor even without the USB. However with Super Grub 2 on a USB I can get it to boot.

I've tried boot-repair but that did not help, I've tried all manner of solutions and grub updates etc. Any ideas? Thanks. I am no expert on Linux but with instruction can work in the terminal as I have Linux on another machine.

Hi AdrainT, and welcome to the forum :)

Boot Peppermint with your supergrub disk, then open a terminal and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l
and
Code: [Select]
sudo blkid

Thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated  :)

From what I can tell in my 15 to 20 hour mission already is that the USB is on sdb1, and that my primary hard drive is sda1.  I'm not certain if that helps you.

Boot using supergrub, then try running the 2 commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
then reboot without supergrub

I tried that but no luck.

The screen sits on this for maybe 30 seconds:

And then it finally says this:

Sorry for the late reply - I was away for Easter.

Hi Adrian

I could be way off the mark here but what I'm gonna suggest won't do any harm

it looks like your BIOS is set to boot from PXE, check your boot order in the BIOS and make sure the first boot drive is set to sda (or whatever the name of that drive is) or invoke the boot menu during boot and select the correct drive

Good luck

Graeme

Hi Graeme,

I did as as you suggested as shown below, but it came back to the same screen as above.

From my searches on the internet it seems that the installation loaded onto the USB itself, not the harddrive of the PC. Not the installation, but something. Sorry I am no expert at this.

At a stage I tried the suggestions in the link below, but am in hope that this forum shed some light:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/125494/cant-boot-without-flash-drive-plugged-in

My father passed away and I have an extra 3 spare laptops, two of them fairly old, and I want to give two of them away to someone who is more needy - and I thought giving them Windows to be a cruel punishment...

Then it opened a new window and displayed this:

UUID=c9fb0343-fbc6-459b-af63-838831484492 none            swap    sw              0       0

As a matter of interest, I just used the same USB to install Peppermint 6 to a Dell laptop as a dual with Windows XP and no problems.

Okay, boot to the LiveUSB, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done
then
Code: [Select]
sudo chroot /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
grub-install /dev/sda
then
Code: [Select]
update-grub
then hit Ctrl+D .. to exit the chroot environment.

Now shut down the PC, and see if it'll boot without the USB stick.

Excuse the stupid question but you mean boot it up again using the USB with SuperGrub2 on it?

Ok remember I cannot boot with that USB and open a terminal. So, I booted up with the SuperGrub2 USB, ejected it, placed in the LiveUSB with Peppermint 6 on and followed your instructions. Seems it has some kind of issue:

Hi AdrianT,

With the computer turned off, insert the Peppermint Six USB stick and try doing what emegra recommended here. Only now select the USB stick.
