Chromium keeps crashing - Acer Aspire One 532h-2630
« on: May 21, 2014, 09:56:52 pm »
Hello,

I am an intermediate Windows user.  I know very little/nothing about Linux.  But I am wanting to learn Linux.  And I am looking for some help.....

I have had a love/hate relationship with Peppermint 3 and now 4 for the last year or so....  When it works, I absolutely love it.  When it doesn't, I am not so happy.....

With Peppermint 3, Chromium kept crashing and eventually other things stopped working.  So I put my netbook on the shelf for a while.

Now I have just installed Peppermint 4 on my netbook (Acer Aspire One 532h-2630)  and the same problem - Chromium keeps crashing.

Help!!!!

Thank you,
Gunter

Hi FriTTe, welcome to the forums.  Just to let you know.  If you choose to use Chrome instead of Chromium.  The Ice app won't work and you'll  be unable to make SSBs  If you are interested there is a custom version made by PCNetSpec called, Ice-Chrome.  Instructions can be found on the old forums; Want a version of Ice for Chrome instead of Chromium?.  This may save you some confusion.  Have fun  ;)!!

@ Gunterw

Can you describe the "crash", and what you're doing when it occurs .. I'm trying to find out if it's flash related, or a more general thing.

With Chromium open, can you also post the output from these 2 commands (run in a terminal):
Code: [Select]
df -h
and
Code: [Select]
free -m

Btw, whats the real difference between SSB in Chromium and if i use Tools-Add program shortcut in Chrome  ???

Finer grained control over where the shortcut is placed in the menu, and icon selection. ;)

When I first loaded Peppermint 4, I found that Chromium simply crashed soon after loading. I loaded up firefox and used it as my browser. Now Chromium works without crashing, so I am not sure what happened.  So I had the duplicate issue for reasons I cannot explain, I used an alternative browser work-around, and now the issue does not exist anymore.

Thank you for all the help!

A more accurate description of the problem is that Chromium displays the "aww snap" logo almost immediately after I lauch a web page.

Interestingly, the "Peppermint Start Page" does not crash.

PCNetSpec, I will get you those outputs in just a few secs.

Thanks again.

P.S.  I use a Gmail and Google Calendar a lot and would prefer to stay with a Google web browser - Chromium or Chrome

Sorry....  How do I accomplish the above?  I thought I simply had to go to the start menu, select "run", and enter the above command.  That is what I did and nothing happens???

Run the commands in a terminal

You can open a terminal either with the keyboard combo Ctrl+Alt+T

or from:-
menu > Accessories > Terminal

Can we stop chatting in Gunterw's support topic please

@Gunterw

couple of things to try

First let's install the ubuntu-restricted-extras and lubuntu-restricted-extras packages:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras lubuntu-restricted-extras
Then close ALL we browser instances and restart Chromium .. does it work now ?

If not, try purging then reinstalling the flashplayer:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall flashplugin-installer
Then close ALL we browser instances and restart Chromium .. does it work now ?

if not .. try starting Chromium from the terminal with the "--no-sandbox" option .. Close ALL web browser instances and open a single instance of Chromium with this command:
Code: [Select]
chromium-browser --no-sandbox
Does that one work OK ?

I don't know what happened... I didn't do or change anything....  It seems now Chromium works flawlessly!!!!!

However, I had the same experience with Peppermint 3.  Initially, Chromium worked well, then it started to crash regularly and eventually it would not even load.  And then some other apps didn't work. So I am not going to hold my breath.  But I will enjoy Peppermint 4 while it lasts.

Be warned, I may come back with the same trouble in a few weeks...

Thanks again for all the help!

I can't believe it....  I rebooted my netbook and Chromium crashes as soon as I load it...  Arrrgggghhhh

Okay.  I will now try PCNetSpec's recommendations "First let's install the ubuntu-restricted-extras and lubuntu-restricted-extras package".    Standby.

Okay. After running "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras lubuntu-restricted-extras" the LXTerminal does a whole bunch of stuff and then stops with the following in the window.

Package configuration

 │
 │                                  <Ok>
 │

Is it finished?  Do I need to do anything?  Should I reboot?

Okay... I was too impatient and assumed it was finished.  I closed Chromium & the terminal & rebooted.  Chromium worked beautifully for 10 minutes......  I then rebooted again and same problem as always.  Chromium crashes as soon as I load it.  I will try PCNetSpec's 2nd recommendation.  Standby....

When I try running "sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer"  This is what I get:

gunter@gunter-AO532h ~ $ sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer
[sudo] password for gunter:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
gunter@gunter-AO532h ~ $

Any suggestions on what to do next?

Okay.  I closed everything and rebooted.  Now Chromium seems to be working again????

Okay.  This gets even stranger.  After rebooting, I open Chromium and open multiple tabs simultaneously, some of the tabs crash (Aw, Snap!) and others don't.  It seems like the Google based apps seem to have the most problems (Gmail, Calendar, etc.).

Any suggestions on what to do next?
