F4 as a global hotkey?
« on: March 14, 2016, 10:19:51 am »
I'm trying to set up F4 as a global hotkey ("pause only" function in vlc). It isn't working, presumably because something else is claiming that key for another purpose. The only thing I can find is that from the file manager F4 opens up a terminal in a particular location.

Is there any way to free up this key to be used as my shortcut? Do I have to remap the key to tell it that F4 is actually something else?

To disable the nemo F4 accelerator hotkey .. run:
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.gnome2/accels/nemoLook for the line (around line 106) that reads:
Code: [Select]
(gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/DirViewActions/OpenInTerminal" "F4")and comment it out, so it now reads:
Code: [Select]
; (gtk_accel_path "<Actions>/DirViewActions/OpenInTerminal" "F4")SAVE the file.

Then log off/on.

OK, that didn't free up the key for VLC. I can't think of anything else that could be using it.

if all you want to happen is when you hit the F4 key, VLC starts...

Run:
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.config/peppermint-control-center/xbindkeys.confand add these 4 new lines at the end of the file:-
Code: [Select]
## Begin - Custom keybinding F4 = VLC
"vlc"
    F4
## End - Custom keybinding F4 = VLC
SAVE the file, then log off/on

No, that's not it. VLC will already be running, I want it to use F4 as the pause key no matter which window is in focus.

It won't recognise F4 being pressed unless I map it to F10 or something.
