Paul Friedl, inventor of personal computer has passed away.
« on: March 05, 2016, 08:23:30 pm »
We got word today that our Uncle, Dr Paul Friedl passed away early this morning after a battle with cancer. He proposed and then lead the IBM team tasked with developing the first portable computer prototype named S.C.A.M.P.

The story he told often goes something like this ... : After presenting and demonstrating S.C.A.M.P. to IBM's John Opel and IBM leaders from around the country, Opel's first response was, "that's amazing, but why would anybody need one? "

Fortunately he approved going over budget to begin production anyway.  Please offer up a thanks to the man who saw the future.

No obituary yet posted, but here's a video he did back in the day detailing the history and leadup.

Along with a local interview from a few years back

R.I.P.  Uncle Paul.
