Reset Peppermint 6 for Laptop Resale
« on: February 13, 2016, 08:45:56 am »
I've installed Peppermint 6 on an old IBM Thinkpad R50e that I'd like to sell on my local Craig's List.  I had to create a login to complete the initial installation but other than that, nothing else has been done.

What do I need to do to prep the system so that all the new user has to do is boot up, be prompted with a "Create new user login..." and go on their way?

There is no way to get it to prompt for "create new user".

What you could do is create a user with a generic name such as "peppermint" or "user" or "default", etc. with a simple password like "peppermint" .. make sure it's added to the "sudo" group (and preferably all the other groups your account is a member of) .. then delete your account and home folder.

As I said, make SURE the new account is a member of the sudo group BEFORE you delete your account or there will be no way of doing anything that requires a password.

Might not be a bad idea to point any buyer to this forum, so if they require any help......

Another idea is to simply blank the drive and include Peppermint on a disc, allowing the buyer to load it up and install it themselves.  Just a thought.

The only secure way to delete your personal information is to give the entire drive a 1-3 pass wipe then do a clean install and updates without installing your personal information.Use a generic username and password. Once the sale is complete you can help the buyer add a new user and assign that user as administrator then delete the old user..
