You Tube Suddenly Stopped Working (Solved)
« on: May 17, 2014, 01:11:40 pm »
I'm running Peppermint 4 on a USB.  You Tube worked great for several weeks.  Suddenly, it doesn't work at all.  The videos on the Peppermint community site do work, as well as videos on other sites.  I don't understand why the You Tube videos suddenly stopped playing.  I will appreciate any help that anyone has to offer.  Thanks.

P.S.  I did purge and re-install the flashplayer, but it didn't work for me. :'(

Hi raddante, welcome to the forum.  :)

What browser are you using?

What happens when you try to play a youtube video?

Is there any kind of error message when you try to run youtube videos?

If you're using Chromium, and just to rule out the flashplayer, can you install firefox and test youtube in that browser:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install firefox
You'll then find firefox at

menu > Internet > Firefox Web Browser

Do youtube videos play OK in that ?

Is this a "LiveUSB" ?

and did you run  an update just prior to it stopping working ?

are you using any extensions in Chromium ? .. if so, have you tried disabling them ?

Hi raddante, welcome to the forum.  :)Thanks!

What browser are you using?  Chromium.  I installed Firefox--it's working in Firefox.  I then disabled all of the Chromium extensions.  Still doesn't work--grrrr...  >:( I don't know what can be wrong.  :-\

What happens when you try to play a youtube video? I get a message: An error occurred, please try again later.

Oh, and I didn't do an update.  i don't think I know how to do that.  I guess I am reeeeally a noob  ::)  Thanks for working with me.  I really like Peppermint.  It's my favorite distro so far.  I've tried several of them.  I like that Peppermint is clean and simple--well, except for when it comes to You Tube  ;D
The distro is one that I downloaded from the Internet.  I have it running on a usb with persistence--I think that's what they call it.  I can save the sessions right onto the USB--pretty cool.

Open your terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t) or (menu>Accessories>Terminal) and run the following....
Code: [Select]
apt update && apt upgrade

Are you happy with Firefox?

I put in the command and tested You Tube--still not working.  I even tried disabling all of the extensions after that--still didn't work.  Was I supposed to type in Code: Select, too?  I only put in the apt update part.  It started scrolling, so it looked like it was doing something.  Firefox is okay.  What I really like about Chromium is that you can just log in and it has all of your settings saved for you.  I read that the newest version of Firefox does that now, but I don't think Peppermint has that version yet, but I may be wrong.

apt update downloads the packages from the repositories
apt upgrade installs the packages

So, you need to run both.  If I understand you correctly, you have not done this since creating your persistent USB.  So, you need to go ahead and update/upgrade.  Since you've already run the apt update command you need only run apt upgrade.

You do not enter Code:[Select] in your terminal.  Just enter "apt upgrade" (without the quotation marks), then press your Enter key, then enter your password when prompted to do so, then enter "Y" when prompted.

Hi raddante,  welcome to the forums.  No the, "Code: [Select]" is just part of the forum page function.  If you click on the [select] part you will see the content below it highlighted.   Go to the terminal window and click your mouse's centre button.  The highlighted text is copied to the terminal.  It is just there to make life a little easier.  Good luck  :)!

Hurray!  After a few minutes, I tried Chromium again and You Tube worked!  Thank you so much  ;D  When I put in the commands, it never asked me for my password.  When I start up from my USB, the screen just asks if I want to try Peppermint.  I click on it and it loads.  I just typed "Y" after it was done scrolling in the terminal and it must have updated.
I have a Firefox question for you.  What I like about Chromium is that you can just log-in and it remembers all of your settings.  I hear that Firefox can do that now, too, but only with the newest version of Firefox.  Is there a way of putting that version of Firefox on Peppermint?

There most certainly is .. I'm running Firefox 29 right now :)

If you want to try it, can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
and I'll post instructions.

It will only ask your password once per session so, apparently, you never closed the terminal between entering the first and second command.
Glad it is working for you......PCNetSpec will get you set up with FF29 whenever you're ready.   ;D

OK, to install Firefox 29 in Peppermint 4 64bit -

First you need to uninstall a package, but Firefox 29 sprovides a spell checker anyway so it's safe to remove .. so open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove hunspell-en-us
When that's finished, and leeft you back at an $ prompt, close the terminal.

Now download this file:
http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/f/firefox/firefox_29.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.2_amd64.deb

Once you have that file, double-click it .. gdebi will open .. wait till gdebi is ready, then click the "Install" button.

It's finished when gdebi says the same version is already installed.

You'll then find firefox at

menu > Internet > Firefox Web Browser
