Is something wrong with galculator (or is it me)
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:58:15 am »
Hi guys

Has anyone tried calculating a percentage of a figure with galculator, lets say I want to add 20% on 100 I can't get galculator to do I installed Gnome calculator and it works fine, it could be the way I'm using galculator or there could me something wrong with my setup but I've tried doing it from the number pad and using the mouse directly in the calculator but it seems as soon as I hit % nothing happens

is it working for anyone else ?

Hi Graeme, I noticed that quite sometime ago.  I just installed SpeedCrunch.  It's a bit beefier than Galulator.  It works though  ;).
Code: [Select]
apt install speedcrunchIt appears under: menu > Accesories > SpeedCrunch.  If you want it under: Office,  run the following commands:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /usr/share/applications/speedcrunch.desktop ~/.local/share/applicationsfollowed by:
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.local/share/applications/speedcrunch.desktopChange the contents from:
Code: [Select]
#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]
Name=SpeedCrunch
Comment=High precision calculator
Exec=speedcrunch
Icon=speedcrunch
GenericName=Calculator
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Qt;Utility;Calculator;
to look like:
Code: [Select]
#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]
Name=SpeedCrunch
Comment=High precision calculator
Exec=speedcrunch
Icon=speedcrunch
GenericName=Calculator
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Qt;Office;Calculator;
Save the file and quit gedit, that's it  ;).

Yeah, it's borked.  I did 100 X 20 and I hit the % key.  The sum of that should have been 20, as 20 is 20% of 100.  However, when I (supposedly) added that to 100, it gave me an answer of 2000.  :o  So, I'm guessing the % key does nothing, and it simply did 100 X 20.  Though, even so, it should still have added 100, so the answer would have been 2100.  I even tried 100 X 20% =, which is now I have to do it with either Android or Gnome Calculator and galculator still came up with 2000.  So, yeah, galculator is fubar.

Works for me ...

The formula is:  percent x%y (x percent of y)

Example:  120%100

I also cloned it from git, to make sure we're using the latest version.

Code: [Select]
╭─vindsl@Azrun ~
╰─➤  git clone https://github.com/galculator/galculator
Cloning into 'galculator'...
remote: Counting objects: 2419, done.
remote: Total 2419 (delta 0), reused 0 (delta 0), pack-reused 2419
Receiving objects: 100% (2419/2419), 2.30 MiB | 857.00 KiB/s, done.
Resolving deltas: 100% (2004/2004), done.
Checking connectivity... done.

Thanks guys

I just wanted it confirmed it was borked and it looks like it is,

I installed gnome-calculator which is working fine although it's perhaps not as pretty as galculator but it's not a tool I use very often anyway so I I'm happy with that

Many thanks

Personally, I prefer function over form.  But, fortunately, there are a lot of calculators for Linux.  :)  If Gnome Calculator is too ugly, there are always others.

Though, it's good that you brought this up and brought it to the attention of the powers that be.  They may want to look at other default calculators for future versions of Peppermint.  (hint, hint ;) )

The formula is:  percent x%y (x percent of y)

I'm not really understanding that, what I wanted to do is ie take a figure and add 20% and add the total

example 100+20% and give me the answer which should be 120, how would you do that in galculator ?

in gnome-calculator it's simple 100 + 20 % = 120 (total) if I want to know what the percentage is 100 * 20 % =20 (percentage)

galculator will give give the correct total using the same formula only if inputed from the keyboard and I cannot get it to calculate the correct percentage value whether inputted from the keyboard or directly into the calculator using the mouse

Agreed !  It's not the most intuitive calculator  ;D

This might help to explain:  http://galculator.mnim.org/documentation.html#notes

The percent operation works as "x percent of y". So if there is 37 on the display and you press the percent button and enter 123, you get as result 37% of 123.

Also, agreed !

It shouldn't be necessary to RTFM in order to use a 'simple' calculator.   ;)

Works for me ...

The formula is:  percent x%y (x percent of y)

Example:  120%100
Indeed, but if you use "Basic Mode" you have to use the "%" sign onscreen because, for me, the one on the keyboard isn't working. In "Scientific Mode" both are working. In "Paper Mode" the keyboard is working (obviously).

Example:
10 plus 10 % of 10 = 11
in galculator: 10+10%10=11

So what's the consensus here .. we switch to gnome-calculator for PM7 ?

Weirdly I thought I already had this pencilled in the PM7 notes, but I can't find it  :-\

Hello emegra,

.20 * 100 = 20 and 20% 100 = 20

It's working here correctly.

Whatever you find that works the best for the most people will be fine with us.  I always have liked Galculator --but that's only because it had been working right.  We just need an easy-to-use, functional calculator, that's all. ;)

[T]here are a lot of people happily running Peppermint ICE which hasn't been receiving ANY updates for a while now .. and I personally would STILL consider that MUCH more secure than any version of Windows with up-to-date AV/Anti-malware ;)

I think that would be best.  It's not large and didn't require any additional dependencies when I installed.  Personally, I'm not a math whiz, hence using a calculator.  So, I find percentages the most basic way: 100 x 20% = 20 + 100 = 120.  No formulas needed.  ;)

I think we've established we need to lose galculator, I don't particularly have a preference so long as it's easy to use and just works, as Vin said it shouldn't be complicated to use a simple calculator, gnome-calculator ticks all the boxes for me but if anyone has other suggestions I'd be happy to go with the flow

Well the only problem I have is mentioned in my previous post...

And I like that you can do following:
10 plus 10 % of 100 = 20
in galculator: 10+10%100=20

You're not bound to a % of the first number!

Can someone check how does that work in gnome-calculator?
