Peppermint OS 4 installation problems
« on: May 15, 2014, 06:51:51 pm »
Okay so I am baffled and maybe the laptop I'm dealing with  is the  problem.  I was so psyched because I was able to follow the online instructions and got Peppermint OS 4 installed on an older Toshiba Satelite c655 until I rebooted.  Now it comes up with a blue screen with 4 options... Peppermint / Linux , Advanced opts for Peppermint, Mem.  test and another mem.  test option.   When I select the top option of Peppermint/Linux I get message...Must load Kernel first???  checked the forums, can't find anything "helpful". (I have reinstalled 3 times and run the recovery option).  My feeling of accomplishment has slowly withered away...hahah.  . Any clue what is happening?

Hi EmBeeFan

How did you install Peppermint did you install via a live session or did you choose "Install Peppermint" from the installer menu ?

if I remember right there was a problem with the text based installer, if you installed that way that may be the problem, which will mean you may have to install again via the live session, but before you do anything reboot the computer and try selecting "Advanced Options" you should then have 2 options one will be Pepperment with your installed kernel version the other will be recovery, select the the option with your kernel version it should look something like "Peppermint GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.8.0-23" and see if it boots into the desktop.

Good luck

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs then you're not quite grasping the situation

Sounds like GRUB isn't getting installed correctly for some reason.

After trying what emegra says, can you boot to your Peppermint LiveCD/LiveUSB, open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -land post the output back here.

If you've attempted to reinstall it would probably be pointless to fix GRUB now.
