I use VLC as main music player...

Another thing I use, which works very well for internet radio, is the ICE application!
For my country I found a site that gives me many local radio stations.

Example:

Probably you can find a similar site for your country and make an "ICE application" with it?

Just an idea!  ;)

Running different OS flavors in VirtualBox, just for fun!

That is a good idea. I'll look into doing that. Thanks!

After a few days of contemplation, installing and uninstalling various players, et cetera, I've come to a conclusion ...  ???

I haven't been using any music manager/player in Peppermint, lately.  There are many reasons for this.  I have a couple of 1000 songs on my SoundCloud page, which I can access from any machine on Earth, hence nothing to install.  And, I DJ 24/7 on DubTrack.fm via bots, which I can also access from any machine, hence no maintenance or management involved.  Put another way, I have playlists all over the web.

The only thing I need a 'music manager' for is downloading and playing podcasts.  In other words, I need a 'podcatcher/podcast client''.

Truthfully, there are only a handful of 'music manager/players' that will support podcasts, and most of them are poorly done afterthoughts.

That said, look what I've moved back to ...

I know it ain't pretty (and it never hurts to try new things)  but Guayadeque is still the only 'manager/player' that works for me.   8)
I keep my music files locally. (My music folder says there are 17,000 files, give or take, although some of them are sub-folders, and I still have CDs and some albums to convert to digital format.) I'm not inclined to put all of that onto the cloud. At this point, I'm only inclined to use the cloud for things that I consider to be temporary or perhaps as an additional backup eventually. Plus, I eventually plan to live a more mobile lifestyle but one in which I may not always have internet access, so I prefer to keep things more local.

I've installed Clementine for now and it seems fine, though I haven't dug too much under the hood yet. I'll also take another look at Guayadeque, although one reason I shied away from it is that I thought I read the developer was working on something different and would not be doing much more maintenance of the project. While I don't need cutting edge, I do want something that will still be viable and usable in a few years as other pieces of Peppermint change.

I'm finding gmusicbrowser good for a large library of music files, the better-tagged they are the easier it works. I don't really use playlists so I can't comment on how that aspect works.

Deadbeef is great and light for just playing individual files or albums.

I setup the PPA from the official Clementine site.  It's for version 1.2.3: www.clementine-player.org.  Or you can run these commands in the terminal in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:me-davidsansome/clementine
followed by:
Code: [Select]
apt update && apt install clementine
You can guarantee the PPA is going to be good.  That's it - have fun  ;).[/quote]

Hope nobody minds my reviving this old thread, I've just reinstalled Clementine from Synaptic... Wondering if there's a good reason to delete and install via ppa instead?

Now I remember why I deleted Clementine the last go'round... it never remembers where my library is on the 2nd and 3rd drives... I don't want to store my music on the main harddrive... ugh...

Looks like there's no 'Bionic' ver:  https://launchpad.net/~me-davidsansome/+archive/ubuntu/clementine

If it was me, I'd go into 'Software Sources' in Peppermint and edit the distro, for that repo, to read 'xenial' or 'yakkety'.

just remove the PPA altogether as clementine 1.3.1 is in the default 18.04 repos.

Okay .. compile it figuring out your own build dependencies (no cheating and using apt-get build-dep or checking the readme).

Still having "fun" ?
