VIA Chrome9 HC incompatible?
« on: May 14, 2014, 06:00:26 pm »
Hi, me again.

I have now unsuccessfully tried to install peppermint  3 and 4 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V3515, which has a VIA Chrome9 HC graphics processor. It keeps booting into a black screen with both peppermint versions. To test Linux compatibility with the laptop further I have also tried to install Linux Mint 16, which had the same problem. With the compatibility mode of Mint 16 I was able to see a X.org log file, which ended with the lines
Loading extension GLX
(EE) server terminated succesfully (0). Closing log file

I just ran mint 16 as a test but would like to install peppermint. It appears however that once more the available drivers do not work well with my graphics card.

I hope that some tweaking can resolve matters.

All the best,
Rens

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -F
and
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C display

Sorry,  perhaps i wasn't clear. After choosing live boot, I go straight into  a black screen. I wouldn't know how to pit into these commands. Is there another way to get into the terminal somehow?

Let's try blacklisting the VIA Frame Buffer driver (viafb).....

Boot to the Peppermint LiveCD/LiveUSB, and when you get to the screen that offers "Try Peppermint" and "Install Peppermint" hit the "Tab" key

Some white writing will appear at the bottom on the screen that ends with

quiet splash --

use the backspace key to remove

--

and replace that with modprobe.blacklist=viafb .. so it now ends with:-

quiet splash modprobe.blacklist=viafb

Then hit enter to boot .. did it boot ?

If it boots into a live session, you can (if you choose) install Peppermint .. but once installed we'll probably have to re-apply that on first boot .. applying that kernel boot parameter to an installed version of Peppermint is done differently, but we'll get to that once3 we know if that works.

Many thanks for helping me out. After entering your suggestions en hitting enter it starts to boot, i.e. briefly shows the screen with booting options and then the screen goes black and stays black. It is again the kind of black that one sees when the screen is on but there is nothing on the screen.

I did this with peppermint 3.

Kind regards,
Rens

I think you are encountering the missing splash screen on some systems...  if you continue to wait on that black screen eventually it will boot up for you and I am sure pcnetspec will help you edit your grub menu so it will show text while booting so you don't think it crashed on you....  :)

I left it on the black screen but after  about ten minutes (I estimate) the computer switched off.

OK, is this a problem with the LiveCD or have you managed to get Peppermint 3 installed, but THEN you get a black screen ?

I know this might sound daft, but is there a way to disable the network adapter in the BIOS ?

if so, will the LiveCD boot with it disabled ?

I could not find this as an option in the PhoenixBIOS setup utility, if that is what you were thinking of.

Many thanks for your help,
Rens
