Check your PM
Not sure it will work, though, as it has a time limit......not sure what it is / was.

Sorry it took me so long to get around to this, but access to a PC with 64bit Peppermint proved awkward.

All you need to do is make sure ia32-libs is installed, then remove the gksu dependency in the guitar pro package .. and Guitar Pro 6 flies on :)

The following instructions were tested in Peppermint 4 64bit, using the "demo" package (gp6-full-linux-demo-r11621.deb) but should work for the "full" package too
(they should also work for 64bit Ubuntu/Mint/etc.)

OK, here we go.....

Open a terminal and run these commands in sequence (do not close the terminal until you reach the end of these instructions):
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
then
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/Desktop/GP6
You'll now find a new directory on your desktop called "GP6" .. copy your gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb file into that directory.
(you can use the demo vesion gp6-full-linux-demo-r11621.deb, but remember to adjust the following commands accordingly)

Back in the terminal, change to that directory:
Code: [Select]
cd ~/Desktop/GP6
now extract the gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb package to a folder called guitar-pro-6
Code: [Select]
dpkg-deb -x gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb guitar-pro-6
now we also need to extract the DEBIAN directory
Code: [Select]
dpkg-deb -e gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb guitar-pro-6/DEBIAN
now you need to edit the control file, so run:
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/Desktop/GP6/guitar-pro-6/DEBIAN/control
find the line that reads

Depends: gksu, libasound2, libc6 (>= 2.1.3), libglu1-mesa, libportaudio0, libportaudio2, libssl0.9.8, libstdc++6, libxml2, libxslt1.1, zlib1g

and remove the gksu dependency (including comma and space) .. so that line now reads:-

Depends: libasound2, libc6 (>= 2.1.3), libglu1-mesa, libportaudio0, libportaudio2, libssl0.9.8, libstdc++6, libxml2, libxslt1.1, zlib1g

SAVE the file and exit gedit.

now gedit has a habit (by default) of creating backups of a file before saving so delete that backup
Code: [Select]
rm -v ~/Desktop/GP6/guitar-pro-6/DEBIAN/control~

now rebuild the package (with a different name)
Code: [Select]
dpkg-deb -b guitar-pro-6 gp6-full-linux-r11621-no_gksu_depndency.deb
when that completes .. if you look in the GP6 directory on your desktop .. you'll find 2 deb's .. the original and one called gp6-full-linux-r11621-no_gksu_depndency.deb

Double-click the gp6-full-linux-r11621-no_gksu_depndency.deb one to install Guitar Pro 6 in 64bit Peppermint.

Thanks for the effort and the post. I have installed a pristine system and installed the bits and bobs that I needed before I jumped into this. In the mean time, I received  a posting from a hardware thread directing me to a posting along the same lines as what you are suggesting: http://paoloambrosio.net/2013/11/16/installing-guitarpro6-on-ubuntu-1310-saucy-64bit.html
There appear to be a couple of differences that I am unsure about. Lastly, I have the "full version" .deb file. Will that make a difference as to the instructions? Cheers.

My instructions above should work for your version

in fact if the .deb you have is called "gp6-full-linux-r11621.deb", follow them verbatim  .. I'd already adjusted them for your package name :)

the link you pointed to goes on to point to a script that does the same as my instructions .. but you learn nothing from a script and if it fails it may not give a clue as to where/why

Your call .. use whichever method/instructions suit you ;)

That is how to learn. I am doing a lot of learning right now, as I decided to do all of this on a vanilla Ubuntu 14.04 system. Unfortunately, for whatever moronic reason, Ubuntu changes things for the umpteenth time and I found that ia32-libs isn't available in 14.04. Soooo, I followed this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2218053, downloaded the package and tried to install it. The unfortunate results are as follows:
Code: [Select]
$ sudo dpkg -i ia32-libs_2.7ubuntu26.1_amd64.deb
[sudo] password for brian:
dpkg: error: dpkg status database is locked by another process

Can't really help with the ia32-libs thing until Peppermint 5 is released .. but once you get those installed, the rest should be the same.

[EDIT]

If I get the chance I'll look into the 14.04 ia32-libs issue in Lubuntu 14.04 later tonight .. but no promises, this is after all the "Peppermint" forum ;)

Understandable. Peppermint OS is still my favorite distro, but everyone I have come in contact running Guitar Pro 6, guitarix, Rosegarden, Jack, etc. seem to be using Ubuntu Studio (which I couldn't get to install on my computer) or vanilla Ubuntu. BTW, I seem to have found a solution. ia32-libs isn't needed at all. I just removed it and then installed the libportaudio0:i386, libportaudio2:i386, and libssl0.9.8:i386 packages. Things seem to be working, but I am not sure if all functionality is available yet.

Thanks for all of the help  ;D

"Launch updater" under the help menu kicks out an error that the updater fails to start.

If it's some kind of in-built application updater I'd expect it to run into permission issues .. if you're running GP6 as a regular user, how can it update anything outside your home folder ?

I'm NOT at this point saying run GP6 with elevated permissions .. I'll test it and let you know.

If on the other hand the .deb added a repository and is attempting to open the system software updater .. I dunno, but again I'll attempt to figure it out in the demo.
