Lenovo laptop turns off display after installing PPM6 [SOLVED]
« on: January 02, 2016, 09:57:14 am »
Hello, dear friends and Happy 2016!  :-*
Last week I`ve bought a brand new Lenovo B40-30 with Win 8.1 Home preinstalled.
Upgraded it to Win 10 for free (8.1 is a disaster). Must say that W10 will remain on current laptop just because of one and only need - maintaining the iPhone, using iTunes.
Well - 120Gbs of hard disk space has been cut for Peppermint 6 64-bit needs. Fired the installation up (boot priority was set up correctly - from the USB flash stick) and then suddenly I`ve started to see how the display turns off every two or three minutes during all the installation. The only way to get display back to work was plugging laptop`s DC power supply on and off. Naive hope - when the install procedure will finish the issue would gone. NOTHING! It still happens. Dunno what to do. :'(
Every help would be very appreciated. :(

P.S. If it matters - W10 runs rock solid.

Well, now updating the installation. Let`s see if it helps.

NOPE! Now when i connect the power supply to laptop, display turns off.

Another one issue: Wi-fi crushes permanently.

ok simple basics first - redownload the iso and check the checksum

How did you create the usb - I find Rufus to be best in windows

Install Peppermint with the power supply connected

I assume none of this happens in win 10?

Someone uber clever will be along soon... Good luck

- ALREADY DONE. NO SUCCESS

How did you create the usb - I find Rufus to be best in windows
- UNETBOOTIN FOR WIN HERE [Rufus is best for Windows itself]

Install Peppermint with the power supply connected
- JUST IMPOSSIBLE

I assume none of this happens in win 10?
- W10 RUNS LIKE A CHARM

P.S. PPMint finds no additional drivers for current Lenovo.

Hi Kulbanski how's it going?  Could you provide some more information about your machine by running the following command in a terminal window?  Please post back the output.
Code: [Select]
inxi -F
Are you able to you confirm that you've performed a full system update and upgrade?  This includes a dist-upgrade ;)

I would hope that Windows 10 runs perfectly on the Lenovo because it's optimized at the factory to run Windows.  I would start worrying if it didn't  ;D.

Is this a screensaver/power manager issue .. does the screen turn off even if you're doing something, or only when you're inactive for a while ?

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -F
so we can get an idea of the hardware.

I` m not sure yet but looks it turns black even when I`m moving a mouse. One thing is clear for me - the only way to get display back is plugging and unplugging AC adapter, laptop doesn` t react on keyboard or touchpad. And right before getting black the display turns brighter for a second or two, if it matters...Weird, but today it` s OK with wi-fi, at least for now...

P.S. Funny in 2016 but Lenovo equipped this gadget with 2Gb RAM only shared with videoram, but I` ve already ordered 4 gigs more.

OK wireless should be an easy fix .. if running:
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep rtl8723be
returns
rtl8723be
amongst the output

then run:
Code: [Select]
echo "options rtl8723be fwlps=0 ips=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
Then reboot.

Once you've confirmed that makes wireless more stable, we'll have a go at upgrading a slightly more recent kernel and graphics stack.

Thanks a lot for now, PCNetSpec!
Actually I`ve already uninstalled PPMint and replaced it with Mint 17.3 Xfce beta - just because it wasn`t possible to work with PPM nomore - in the end the display used to go black even after pressing any key :'(
Well - the hope dies last! Gonna give PPMint another try today (I really do love the distro and to be honest I just don` t want to use another one (OK, lets call it habit), even not any of Mint flavors).  ::)

P.S. Perhaps it matters: Mint 17.3 installation crashed at first try (it couldn` t install grub2, reported grub back as error). Did the brute reboot, and tried once more with the same stick and same installation - all gone flawlessly. Weird...
Display problems seems to be gone for me in Rosa, BUT I` ve noticed kinda unstability with wi-fi once - it seemed for me like the signal would lose it` s strength.

That fix above for the rtl8723be wireless driver applies to Mint 17.3 too (or any other Ubuntu 14.04 based distro) .. it'll make your wireless much more stable ;)

Upgrading Peppermint 6 to the 3.19 kernel and graphics stack would leave it with the same components as Mint 17.3 (i think).

BACK TO PEPPERMINT!  8) Did the recommended command-line trick, now lets see what happens with wireless.
P.S. Display still goes black after pluggin to AC.
P.P.S. Second pack of cigarettes and third liter of coffee today already...
P.P.P.S. After about 1,5 hour wi-fi looks stable...

This may be related to the power manager daemon dimming the display when it's idle PCNetSpec. A few people around the internet have mentioned as much.

Kulbanksi, try unchecking the "Dim display when idle" option in the Power Management Preferences window. To get there, right-click the battery icon in your panel, click preferences, and remove the check-mark if it's present.

Just did as you suggested, man! Thanks! Lets see further. Wi-fi looks stable.

Added:  looks that after about 10 minutes puter goes to sleep and it` s very hard to wake it up - even adding AC power doesn`t help immediate. The way is to close the lid several times and if I add mentioned adapter it finally wakes up.
I bet it`s bad luck with a current kernel and the current hardware.  :(

Distinct possibility as Mint Xfce uses a different power manager.

The 2 main differences here with Mint 17.3 are the power manager, and kernel/xorg versions.

easy enough to change both :)

Well, it seems to me I`ll start with power manager.
Could you explain the process in an couple words, PCNetSpec?
