what specs are advised to enable Peppermint to fly?
« on: December 15, 2015, 02:12:01 am »
My peppermint is currently installed on a usb hard drive and booting into my work laptop...

This is almost brilliant...but almost isn't good enough

I'm going to buy a laptop. A few questions

I'm thinking 4gb ram. Does Linux ever need more?

Is Intel i3 sufficiently powerful to make it fly ?

Is Peppermint easy to install alongside windows 8/10?

Linux distributions tend to tell you the minimum spec, sometimes the recommended spec, but never the "enough to kick bottom spec" ! :)

Any advice appreciated, cheers!

My main laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Li3710 powered by a Dual core Intel Pentium Dual CPU T3400 at 2.16 GHz.  This laptop is a screamer and it has 4GB of RAM and a standard HDD.  An i3 with 4GB of RAM will have Peppermint Six flying.  If you want it to go hypersonic, make sure you're using a tweaked SSD instead of a standard HDD.  Do this and you'll probably need to nail it down to stop it going into orbit  :o!  Seriously, don't worry about the specs you're proposing.  They're well in excess of the minimum requirements  ;).

It would be hard to buy a new laptop today that wouldn't fly with Peppermint .. an i3 with 4GB is WAY more than is "necessary", so rest assured Peppermint will fly like the wind on it.

As Andy suggests, with that hardware the bottleneck of the system will not be the CPU or RAM, it'll be the speed data retrieval .. so if you want it to go even faster, get an SSD ;)

Also be aware that your current setup of loading Peppermint from an external USB HDD is being *seriously* limited by the speed of the USB port .. it would be faster on the internal HDD

The 64bit version of Peppermint 6 should be a breeze to install next to Win8/8.1/10 .. even with UEFI and secureboot

The operating system itself likely doesn't ever need more, but whether or not you need more depends on what you're doing.  If you're doing a RAM heavy task like video editing and rendering, or 3D CGI, or something along those lines, 4GB won't be enough.  For most things, though, it's plenty.

Is Intel i3 sufficiently powerful to make it fly ?

Yes, it should be plenty.

Really, as Andy and PCNetSpec said, most modern laptops should fly with Peppermint.  The only thing that makes them sluggish is the terribly heavy OS that comes preinstalled.

If you're not planning on heavy duty gaming or intense graphics rendering.  Then 4GB is certainly plenty.  If the machine your looking at can take 6 or 8GB, it can't hurt to have the extra reserves  ;).

Yeah, probably, since a laptop will share RAM with the graphics processing unit.  If you're not playing any graphically intensive games, I wouldn't worry about it.
