Yes, the update added 2 more kernels 13.0-74  and 19.0-42.48.  What's the instruction to remove specific kernels- got 5 now? Now with 19.0-42 at least the resolution is right again. Haven't tested 13.0-74, but will after I send this.

Or just reinstall Pep5 cause it worked out of the box- you had me going forward not backward. Is there any instruction to reload original display stacks (or whatever), and REPAIR OpenGL. We seemed to do everything but concentrate on the display problem, which I think intuitively has some simple fix- I got most of the nonworking programs to display by just changing a setting in LXconfig.

If I redo the Pep5 (if the disc is perfect), and then only do a few updates at a time, maybe I can find the problem update. Or maybe it was just random installation corruption. This time I wouldn't do it with a live connection.

What's a LIVE instruction to install Pep3 in the same partition, or should I download + burn the disc?

As I've explained, there is NO perfect solution in recent versions of xorg .. the SiS frame buffer driver is rubbish (in fact so rubbish it's blacklisted default)

Downgrading the xorg stack to the one used in 12.04 would probably cause a ton of dependency problems, so a fresh install of peppermint 3 would be a LOT easier.

That said, there's nothing wrong with your plan of going with Peppermint 5/6 and not updating .. if that works.

maybe the xforcevesa kernel boot parameter might help ? .. but I'm clutching at straws here.

What setting ?

Really not sure, but I think I tweaked something in Core Apps, or Autostart
LXsession configuration

How do I insert that xforcevesa command into the boot exactly?

And would not updating Pep5 cause all kind of security holes?? As I said, if I get it working OK I'm going to install updates only a few at a time.

What's the instruction to remove specific kernels- got 5 now?  I tried in Synaptic before rebooting, bu it only wanted to remove 117 megs instead of 280

Hi harrisk how's it going?  Before you clean up your kernels, lets take a look which ones you have.  In a terminal window please run the following command and post the output back to the forum  ;).
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep linux-image

as well as the output Andy asked for, can you also post the contents of
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.config/lxsession/Peppermint/desktop.conf
and
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.config/lxsession/Peppermint/autostart
so I can see what changes you made.

Well I had:
13.0-29  (from reinstall)
13.0-73.116
13.0-74.118   from last software update

19.0-41.46  (14.04.2) also last software update
19.0-42.48 (14.04.1)

But I had no space and deleted 3 with Symantec search for Linux, leaving only
13.0- 73  +
19.0-42

Running  -42, but it is so sick, unless I boot into recovery, it is displaying at 640x480 (and won't take a change), but realized even the marginally working kernels are displaying at 1064x780, when my display is actually 1280x800, hence the display mismatch.
Whats the code to force monitor into a certain resolution? Maybe that's the whole problem? Fat chance.

ignore those gtk-warnings, they're not important

Can you post the contents of
Code: [Select]
gedit /etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint/desktop.conf
for comparison

There's quite a bit of difference there, and I can't test them all as I'm not running Peppermint 5

How do you fancy wiping and starting over with Peppermint 6 ? .. then doing as you suggest and doing a few updates at a time in case something breaks.

Quite a bit of difference between what and what?

Yes, but I'd like to do that with Pep5, since I don't see how a newer installation would be more compatible with an ancient computer. And I don't want to burn a new disc. I know the original Pep5 worked OK.

Can you plz give me the code to force the monitor res to 1280x800. If that works and fixes many problems, maybe I can write it into the boot sequence.

Personally I can see no point in repeating something and expecting a different outcome, so I figured if PM5 worked until you got some updates I can see no reason why PM6 wouldn't also work (and maybe, just maybe not get broken by updates) .. considering a reinstall doesn't take long I thought it worth a shot considering it'd be easier for people here to give support for PM6.

That said, it's your PC and if you don't want to listen to me .. don't.

Code: [Select]

or maybe
Code: [Select]
xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x800

But that'll only work if it's a supported resolution

I understand you always want people to use the newest shiniest development- I do too, which having anything where I can't do updates seems useless.. but people keep making provisions for new hardware and capabilities that change all kinds of other things, and drop support for older junk... so of course the newer versions work worse with the older gear. And since they both are based on 14.4, seems they are equivalent in basic terms. I might download 6 and see if the LIVE disc boots up OK.

No, didn't work on both:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

Now about
Code: [Select]
xrandr --output default --gamma 0:0:0 --mode 1280x800

Yeah, try a PM6 Live session .. it hasn't "dropped" any support for SiS from PM5, PM5 didn't have any to to drop to begin with.

[...] would not updating Pep5 cause all kind of security holes??

I know this is anecdotal information, but ...

I'm still running Peppermint 5 (fully updated) on my 'road warrior' laptop.  I'm totally dependent on it, while I'm on the trot, all over the country, 1000s of miles from home.

Many times I need to use unsecure (non-encrypted) WiFi and ethernet connections in federal court rooms, airports, coffee shops, convention halls, hotels, office centers, and so forth, and my Peppermint 5 install has yet to be hacked.

A possible explanation for this is, perps aren't expecting anyone to be using a Linux computer in these environments, but who knows ?!?!

I'm always concerned about security vulnerabilities.  However, Peppermint 5 hasn't proven to be a problem in this regard.  ;)
