I was lurking on the Google+ Ubu MATE site tonight, when I ran across this unrelated posting:

Softpedia Linux originally shared:

Mozilla Firefox 43.0 will land on December 15 with GTK3 integration (finally!)

news.softpedia.com

First Beta build is now available for download

Emphasis added   8)

That's all it took.  I love alphas, betas, rcs, trunk builds, et cetera...

So far, so good.  If you're up for an adventure, give it a whirl.

Truthfully, I haven't been a Fx fanboi for some time.  Maybe this will be a game-changer.   ;)

Let me just backup my ~/.mozilla directory, and we're away.....
:)

[EDIT]

Oh that's a MASSIVE improvement :) .. doesn't have that god awful striping in the bookmark/history manager that made it awkward to read with the Peppermix-Dark theme.

It'll also give theme creators MUCH more control

[EDIT2]

In fact pretty much ALL dialogs look and behave better :) :D :) :D ;D :D :) :D :)

Old gtk2 bookmarks manager in Peppermix-Dark

New gtk3 bookmarks manager in Peppermix-Dark
(I can much more easily fix that white text on light grey background in gtk3 .. those horrible stripes in gtk2 are impossible to remove)

Upload dialog also looks cleaner now...

Firefox 43 beta 2 is available directly from Mozilla here:
https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/43.0b2/
(as a second beta I'd expect it to be pretty solid)

or if you wanna go REALLY bleeding edge, there's Firefox 45 alpha 1 in the nightly builds:
https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-central/
(that one's probably best left for bug hunters and breakage headbangers like VinDSL)

Glad you mentioned that.

I didn't bother compiling Fx beta 1.  Why should I ?!?!.  I just manually installed it in ~ /opt and made a suitable .desktop file for the P6(R1) menu.

When I first started Fx beta 1, I was blown away by the many differences.  A few minutes later, an update notification popped up on my desktop (YaY!) informing me that Fx beta 2 was available for download.

I brought up the 'About' window, and clicked the 'Update' button, but was greeted with a dialog about me not having auth to update Fx.  It said to contact my system administrator,  et cetera.   So, I closed Fx and re-opened it with superuser auth.  When I did this, Fx immediately and automatically upgraded to beta 2, e.g. I didn't need to click anything - that's the way its setup in 'Options', by default.  The SU nag could be a bug, or simply a permissions prob.  I'll chmod it again and see what happens

Anyway, yes, all_in_all they've done a fine job on Fx 43.  I'm very impressed with their GTK3 integration.   8)

It's about time.  GTK3 has been out for more than four years, so it was nice of them to finally get around to this.  Oh well, better late than never.

You don't "install" it as such (it's self contained) .. you just extract it, then enter the extracted folder .. and click on the "firefox" binary.

If you want the new version to open from the menu icons you'll want to edit the firefox.desktop file at
/usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop
and point the "Exec=" line at the new version.

I can talk you through it if you want, but it might just be easier to wait until it's released and updated in the repos .. then it'll just come through as an automatic update.

Let me know if you want instructions to move it to /opt and edit the firefox.desktop file .. but be aware, if you make the changes to the .desktop file you'd need to undo them to go back to the earlier version.

Or, you could just wait a week or two for it to hit the main repository.  Since it's in Beta now, that's probably as long as it's going to take.

Thanks for the advise.
I can wait :)
