OSCON 2015 Amsterdam
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:44:20 am »
Hi everyone, I'm at OSCON Amsterdam and having a great time: http://conferences.oreilly.com/open-source-eu-2015.  Just finished the Keynotes in the main auditorium.  There were presentations about The evolution of evolutionary Architecture, The Self Project from PayPal, Docker Security and the one I found really interesting, Programming as performance - live coding with Sonic Pi.  It's amazing to see Raspbian on a cinema screen.  Performance music being made using Ruby.  This was to get kids interested in coding.  There's a longer lecture about Sonic Pi that I'll be attending a little later - great stuff.  I'm off to get a coffee a have a look at some new projects.

Careful .. AFAIK "I did it for VinDSL" isn't a defence with legally recognised precedent ;)

Hi everyone, it's day two at OSCON Amsterdam.  Not only is the weather beautiful today, the conference is also packed with interesting stuff.  Below is todays schedule:

I've just finished a lecture regarding passwords, or lack of them by Tim Messerschmidt from PayPal.  It was an extremely interesting talk.

One the things I have found very strange here, is the the sea of Macs at an Open source convention  :-\.  Even the visual presentations are all done on either Macs or Windows machines running PowerPoint.  I think it's a huge missed opportunity for LibreOffice and Linux.  It's a really big FAIL on the part of the Open source community  >:(.  They really should have laid down some software criteria for the convention.  Other than that, it's a great convention.  It's now lunch, a huge buffet with loads of goodies.  All courtesy of PayPal - thanks Elon  ;)!  I'm off to fill my face and recharge, before this afternoon's lectures  ;).

PS: I still can't find Miss Google to pinch her butt - sorry VinDSL.  I'll keep looking though  :D!!

Surveillance and the erosion of weirdness  :-\

We obviously need a "SAVE THE WEIRDNESS" campaign.
(for just £3 a month you can adopt some weirdness .. as cheap as saving a donkey)

Agreed!  I find that observation of yours to be shocking. :-\  But good for you for being there, Andy.  Thank you for going to the convention,  and thank you for reporting in.

As for pinching Miss Google, be careful, Andy.  Although Miss Google may have originally been open source, chances are good her software has become proprietized by now.  Still, there's good news here:  Miss Firefox remains open source and free for the pinching! ;)
[T]here are a lot of people happily running Peppermint ICE which hasn't been receiving ANY updates for a while now .. and I personally would STILL consider that MUCH more secure than any version of Windows with up-to-date AV/Anti-malware ;)

Yeah, you're right.  I couldn't find Miss Google and if I did, she'd be charging something for sure  ;D.  After all, this is Amsterdam  :P!!
