Unable to Download Updates
« on: March 30, 2014, 08:32:18 pm »
Hello, I just installed Peppermint 4 and everything seems to work OK except I am unable to download and install the updates that show are ready. While I am entering my password, the update screen terminates. I have no problem downloading and installing new programs. Just trying to update doesn't work. Thanks!

Run an update from the command line .. open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), then run these 3 commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get upgrade
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
then REBOOT.

I hope that I am not "polluting" this topic, which has already been marked as "Solved" but my issue is really relevant; it seems that it has been more than 3 months since I last managed to get some updates following the approach mentioned above and I have started getting worried, because I used to have updates every at least a couple of weeks... any ideas about that?

If you're using Peppermint 4 support from the Ubuntu repo's has ended .. so you're not going to get any new updates.

Ubuntu decided to shorten support cycles for non LTS versions to 9 months with 13.04 (which Peppermint 4 is based on)

Don't panic though, I'd still consider Peppermint 4 very secure .. indeed there are still people running Peppermint One/Ice/Two without issue.

And Peppermint 5 is due out soon .. which IS based on an Ubuntu LTS release.

If on the other hand you're running Peppermint 3 (which was based on the previous Ubuntu LTS), you should still be receiving updates.

If this is the case, please post any errors reported when you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update

Thank you for your immediate response; indeed I have been using PM4 so I trust the fact that my system will still be safe. In any case, I am really looking forward to getting the PM5 in one of these fancy-looking wooden USB sticks ;-)

sudo apt-get update does not give me any error messages.

I wish there was a way to mark a topic as double-solved!

Just edit your first post and add (SOLVED) to the end of the title and save it...  :)
