Volume popup
« on: October 09, 2015, 04:14:17 am »
I found a tutorial over on askubuntu.com to get volume popups when you use Fn keys.

First, install xfce4-volumed, gstreamer0.10-alsa, and xfce4-notifyd
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xfce4-volumed xfce4-notifyd gstreamer0.10-alsa

Second, remove notify-osd or notification-daemon
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove notify-osd
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove notification-daemon

Third, go to Menu>Preferences>Default applications for LX Session, click on Autostart, and make sure that XFCE Volume Daemon is checked.

Logout and back in.

To change settings for popups, such as time to display, opacity, and theme, open Run from menu and type
Code: [Select]
xfce4-notifyd-config

To get the config box under Menu>Preferences:
copy the file
Code: [Select]
/usr/share/applications/xfce4-notifyd-config.desktop
to
Code: [Select]
~/.local/share/applications
Open the copied file with text editor, scroll to the bottom and find
Code: [Select]
OnlyShowIn=XFCE
and make it read
Code: [Select]
OnlyShowIn=XFCE;LXDE
Now it shows up in preferences as Notifications.

Note: the brightness indicator stills shows up as the same as always, this is due to using MATE power manager. If you would like the brightness popup to match those offered by xfce4-notifyd, then you need to uninstall mate-power-manager and install xfce4-power-manager.

Uninstall MATE power manager:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove mate-power-manager
Install XFCE4 power manager:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xfce4-power-manager

I also installed the recommended packages, just to make sure everything works fine. Logout and back in.
Remember to add Power Manager to autostart, otherwise your power settings won't take effect on boot until you manually start power manager.
