I didn't know these email clients needed plug-ins. I have always considered them to be lightweight email clients :)

Elementary OS uses "Geary" by default and it's a good, simple email client which supports html out of the box and shows an unread badge on the dock (like iOS), but I don't know why it stops syncing when I close the window :/ I need something like geary with a built-in notification feature which never stops syncing when I close it.

As for now, I'm happy with Thunderbird. :)

if you like geary it's in the repos, and you can always use mail-notification for when it's closed

or there's a more recent version of geary here

32bit

No idea mate, you know more than I do about geary .. I haven't used anything but webmail for years now, I can't see the point in it

I see the topic has now been marked "[SOLVED]"; just for the record, though, Claws Mail can display and even allows replying to HTML only messages. Please see:

Actually I had installed mail-notification. unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work with Thunderbird although Evolution runs fine with it. I am now using firetray add on along with Thunderbird instead. But firetray has certain issues (because it is not an official add on).

Thank you Midas. Does Claws email has a native notification in system tray feature? (like Sylpheed)

So what's wrong with Thunderbird ?

Nothing now.   ;D

Sorry for posting in this old thread, but ... it's relevant.

I figured out a way to make Thunderbird display (new email) notifications on the desktop in Peppermint 7, just like other apps

Hrm ...

I wonder if this situation bugged anyone else but me.    :-\

BTW, this is a Thunderbird bug, not a Peppermint bug.

BTW

Some of you prefer webmail to a local e-mail client.  I am about to propose in our office a webmail client which would connect to our local mail server. Does anybody here have a proposal which webmail client would challenge Thunderbird?

Hi all,
Unless I missed it, nobody seems to have suggested FossaMail, a Thunderbird-like mail client, from the same crew  that brought us the Palemoon browser.

I use FossaMail myself, and it's not bad at all. (Especially with the Calendar plugin)

Just my 2c,

Phil

hmmm, in my experience Thunderbird, and its sibling Seamonkey, both natively show incoming notifications.. which i always want to turn off...  In Seamonkey its located:
Quote
Edit >Preferences > Mail & Newsgroups > Notifications
no longer know where its located in Thunderbird... haven't used it since moving to Linux.

FWIW, I prefer dedicated on my laptop e'mail because its just easier to have the e'mail client check all 12 of my accounts at once... rather than going to the hassle of visiting each webmail site...  and google's gmail keeps having connection issues...

Notifications don't presently work in Thunderbird.  It's a long-standing bug, that they apparently don't care to fix upstream.  It doesn't natively 'Show an alert', nor 'Play a sound', which is why I turned them off in the Thunderbird preferences.

Instead, I tested all the usual, stale, unsupported Thunderbird notification add-ons, and the only one that worked a treat was "Mail Alert" (with a custom executable).

Here's the command I conjured up ...

Code: [Select]
/usr/bin/notify-send -t 10000 -i /usr/share/pixmaps/thunderbird.xpm %sendername\ %folder %subject
Works perfect, and the Thunderbird 'When new messages arrive' notifications now match all the other notifications in Peppermint 7.  ;)

I used it a bit and found it to be very fast but a bit quirky.  Not all shortcuts work and there's no way to empty trash directly from the app itself (you can, however, use the IP's web app to do that).  From what I understand, developers are working to add the trash empty function.  If that's not an issue for you it's an excellent email app IMHO.
