Jeez, you weren't kidding were you .. 1Mb/s  :o  .. doesn't really sit well with the "hotrod" image now does it ;)

OK, try disabling hardware enccryption (so it's done in software) .. open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
when a BLANK file opens, add a single line that reads:
Code: [Select]
options ath9k nohwcrypt=1
SAVE the file and exit gedit.

Now REBOOT.   <-- it's IMPORTANT that you reboot here

Now post the output from:
Code: [Select]
iwconfig

If for some reason this kills wireless completely, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -v /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
and reboot .. and you'll be back to where you are now.

Have you tried simply restarting your router ?

I know that may sound weird, but worth ruling out.

Also, have you tried booting the previous kernel and checking if that makes a difference ? .. and checking if it's still slow from a Peppermint 6 LiveCD/LiveUSB (which if it worked properly previously should tell us if it's a hardware or software problem) ?

Hi hotrodwinston, could you please remember to encapsulate terminal outputs with the Insert, Code # function.  For extra long outputs, please use the Spoiler, Sp function.  It preserves the original format of the output.  This makes it easier for future visitors to relate to their own issues.  These functions are found in the forum editor, above the,  :-[ Embarrassed and  the :'( Cry emoticon respectively.  I've done this for you this time - many thanks  ;).

my apologies AndyInMokum!

It worked fine on liveusb (didnt want to reset router while wife is using hulu)
booted back to harddrive and it seems ok now.
(some slow but that could be due to wife being on hulu on the wifi!)
ran iwconfig several times over last 45 min

No need for apologies  ;D.  God forbid, don't disturb 'em while they're watching TV.  Life's too short for that  ;D.  Just a thought, have you tried changing your WiFi channel in your router?   Run the following and post back the output:
Code: [Select]
sudo iwlist scan

Glad I kept reading.  I was just about to suggest that.   ;D

I'm surrounded by a sea of WiFi routers/modems.  Channel 11 used to work a treat, but I had to switch to channel 9, the other day.  My closest neighbors started using channel 11 for some reason, now.   :-\

Channel 11 seems fine, nobody else around you seems to be on it

BUT

I'd switch OFF the autochannel feature .. this can cause your router to suddenly change channel then change back again .. the adapter then thinks the connection is unstable and slows the connection in an attempt to stabilise it.

ok - so after turning off the auto channel and resetting the router i can now use my wifi again!
it still seems slow but netflix is running on another device so that may be why.
i will test it further in the morning before everyone else in the house is up so i can get clean speeds (im on a 75mbit net line so it should be fast).
in the mean time here is some output from iwconfig - these were taken about 10 minutes apart after about 2.5-3 hours of wifi usage with only a few times youtube had to stop and buffer.

So far, so good .. fingers crossed :)

You might also want to try undoing the change we made earlier that disabled hardware encryption .. to do this, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -v /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
and reboot.
