help needed with website development (SOLVED)
« on: October 06, 2015, 06:04:04 pm »
Hi All,
Can I ask here for some help on making a website for my local woodworking club.
Can I ask what is needed to create a site on my computer and what I need to install, I have had a look at Wordpress and even bought a book on building a website but the author doesn't use the free .com site and uses the fee paid .org site. I will take a while to get this together and don't want to start paying fees if I can run it on my computer.
Can anyone tell me what I need to get this project running/ if I can get this project running. ?
Machine Specs
Intel Celeron CPU 1.80 Ghz   Memory 4.00 GB  Peppermint 6 64 bit   500 GB HD  496 GB Ext 4  4.0 GB Swap Partition  4.0 Extended Partition   1.1 Mb Free Space

take care
Don W

There's a good tutorial for using tasksel to install the LAMP stack here:
http://www.allaboutlinux.eu/how-to-install-wordpress-3-3-on-ubuntu-11-10/2/
(start from that page, NOT page 1)

it then goes on to show how to install/configure phpmyadmin (for the database administration/creation), and install wordpress.

Be aware, transferring the database and wordpress template from your local PC to whoever you eventually use as a hosting service may not be straightforward and may differ from service to service.

And you WILL want it hosted .. hosting it yourself will be difficult/impossible for quite a few reasons.

so to tell the truth it's normally easiest to just build the wordpress site "in situ" on the hosts servers .. but I suppose this can teach you some stuff about how the backend works, and give you some wordpress practice.

Thanks for that Mark,
I am in no hurry to get this up and running.
The present site is running on Joomla and it is a bit dated. I don't think it has been updated for a while.
I was hoping to play with wordpress on my own computer to gain some experience, If I gain enough proficiency in this I will then create a site using a new domain name and hosted on someone else's server.

take care
Don W
PS I will now pop back to the UK and start to create  ;)

I am sorry Mark, :-[
I have completed so much of that tutorial with some success, but it is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to get the results that the chap seems to achieve with no bother.
I have now reached Part/page 5 and can't find my way forward.
' Open a browser and navigate to “http://localhost/wordpress“, you can now see the first page of wordpress installation. '
When I carry out this action I get a ' 404 Error Not Found. The requested URL /wordpress was not found on this server '.
I don't know where to go next ?

take care
Don W

Hi donwatson, could you please remember to encapsulate terminal outputs with the Insert, Code # function.  For extra long outputs, please use the Spoiler, Sp function.  It preserves the original format of the output.  This makes it easier for future visitors to relate to their own issues.  These functions are found in the forum editor, above the,  :-[ Embarrassed and  the :'( Cry emoticon respectively.  I've done this for you this time - many thanks  ;).

OK, I see where the problem is .. the wordpress directory should be in the html directory .. open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo mv -v /var/www/wordpress /var/www/html/wordpress
you might now  want to run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo nemo /var/www
and in the window that just opened delete everything except the "html" directory.

Now go to
http://localhost/wordpress
