Ice still depends on Chromium (Solved)
« on: October 03, 2015, 12:36:28 pm »
This isn't as much an issue as it is an oddity I've noticed.  Now that Ice can use Firefox, I'd assumed that meant it would be fine without Chromium, but it apparently still depends on Chromium.  I uninstalled Chromium without uninstalling Ice, just in case I wanted to use it.  However, I tried opening it just now, but it wouldn't open.  I tried reinstalling, that didn't work.  So, I did a purge uninstall and tried to install it again and that's where I found what the issue is.  It wants to install Chromium.  So, it appears that, even though we can use Ice now with Firefox, we can't do it without Chromium installed.  That sucks for those of us who don't like Chromium and don't want it installed.

Maybe this is something that can be looked into for Peppermint Seven.  Maybe the dependency can be changed to where you need Chromium or Firefox.  Just food for thought.

Hi scifidude76,

Strange, I do not have Chromium and ICE works. BUT: I do have Chrome-stable installed! That is probably why it still works.

Ya, uninstalling chromium broke Ice for me, didn't try it with chrome. I only use Ice with firefox because it seems to require the least amount of resources (and I just like firefox better  ;D)

While running a firefox SSB no chromium processes show up (and only one firefox process, as supposed to three when running a chromium SSB  ::))

What exactly is Ice using chromium for? And can it be achieved in firefox?

Can you guys test something for me .. if it works I'll push it as an update

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/bin/ice
find line 538 which reads
Code: [Select]
            chrome.set_active(True)
and change it to
Code: [Select]
            firefox.set_active(True)
so that whole section reads
Code: [Select]
        global firefox
        firefox = Gtk.RadioButton.new_with_label_from_widget(None, "Firefox")
        if not os.path.exists("/usr/bin/firefox"):
            firefox.set_sensitive(False)
if not os.path.exists("/usr/bin/chromium-browser") and not os.path.exists("/usr/bin/google-chrome") and os.path.exists("/usr/bin/firefox"):
            firefox.set_active(True)
SAVE the file .. and test Ice with ONLY Firefox installed.

Cool, thanks scifidude79 :)

No, thank you.  Now I can use Ice without having Chromium or Chrome installed.   8)

Looks like it was just an oversight in the ice python script, but I'm gonna test it tomorrow before pushing it as an update.

Hi PCNetSpec,

Your suggested modification of /usr/bin/ice also works for me (Google Chrome stable tested).

Ha! That is why I love open source :-*

I would of been more prompt but my system took a dump on me. By the time I could gedit on a fresh copy of peppermint Ice was already updated  :D.

Open source for the win!
