[SOLVED] Unetbootin Problems
« on: September 22, 2015, 03:01:45 pm »
Hi :)
I'm trying to install P6 (32-bit) on an old Asus eee-pc 1025.
The old OS got messed up beyond recognition after some failed installation attempts of other OSs and then got "cleaned up" using the dd command.
Now I created a P6 boot usb drive using my MacBookPro ... but when I insert the usb device in the eee-pc and boot the machine I get this error

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

I did go into the BIOS and select the USB device as primary boot... but I still get this error.

Help?  :-\

Hi Hasimir

Have you used this usb drive before to install Linux, if not do you have the one you successfully installed Linux before or another one you could try ?

yes I installed both p4 and p5 using that usb key: sundisk 16gb from a few years ago
it works perfectly (as far as moving files around is concerned, at least).

to prepare it for Unebootin I formatted it using my MacBookPro Disk Utility.
I erased it, with the name "Peppermint6" the format "MS-DOS FAT" and the scheme "Master Boot Record"
Then run Unebootin using the ISO for p6 32-bit (MD5 checked out fine)

Can you boot another PC from the USB stick as it is now ?

the mac has a terminal right ? .. does it also have dd and cat command ?

have you got access to a Windows or Linux PC ?

mmm... nope...
after I run Unebootin it clearly says that I can't use that bootable USB device with a Mac :(
but yes, OSX recognises both dd and cat
I have no other computers (only another mac) but I can get a hold of another usb drive if needed

How comfortable are you using dd on your mac ? .. remembering that if you get it wrong dd will not hesitate to overwrite your hard drive.

Do you know how to identify the USB stick at the OS X command line ?

not too comfortable, but avoiding a disaster should not be too hard
running diskutil list I see all disks and partitions.
all system partitions and disks are /dev/disk0 and  /dev/disk1 with various partitions such as  /dev/disk0s1 or  /dev/disk0s2
the usb device is read as  /dev/disk2 with its main partition being  /dev/disk2s1

OK, assuming your home folder is
/home/hasimir0
and the Peppermint ISO name is
peppermint.iso
and the USB stick is
/dev/disk2

Then put the Peppermint ISO image in your home folder and run:
Code: [Select]
dd if=/home/hasimir0/peppermint.iso of=/dev/disk2 bs=1M
(probably needs to be run as root)

but don't blame me if things go horribly wrong.

so I checked my directories and devices and this is the code I came up with

Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=/Users/hasimir/downloads/Peppermint-6-20150904-i386.iso of=/dev/disk3 bs=1M

But the terminal says

Code: [Select]
dd: bs: illegal numeric value

Instead of using Unebootin, use Rufus to create the USB-bootable from the P6 iso. If you can't use it on a MacBook Pro, see if you can find a PC. I've had plenty of problems getting ISOs to boot off a USB when Unebootin was used to create the image, even though all seemed fine as Unetbooting was doing it's thing on the USB dongle. Using Rufus solved all that...and I used it to put P6 on my Asus eeePC.

OK dd must be slightly different on a mac .. skip

try
Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=/Users/hasimir/downloads/Peppermint-6-20150904-i386.iso of=/dev/disk3 bs=1048576

dd: /dev/disk2: Resource busy
(yes disk2 is correct, for some reason diskutil this time detected the usb device there :P )

Hi I get the same error when I use peppermint USB image writer to make a puppy Linux precise 5.7.1 Bootable pen drive " Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key".

hence, I use UNetBootIn to write puppy linux to my pendrive. otherwise the PM6 image writer works faster than UNetBootIn, successfully on all other distros. You can try out other USB image writers and see if they work

It worked, thanks! :D
Now dd should have written the p6.iso on the usb drive.
Can I just try and install it or is there anything else I should do first?
