Thanks Guys for your support and re-assurance that I'm not totally wasting your time.

In fact yesterday evening I screwed things up completely by doing what I thought was a clean-up just in case there was something leftover that was stopping things from working.  Anyway I unintentionally started an automatic deletion through 'Synaptic Package Manager' and ended up with a blank screen which stopped dead after logging in so I did a re-install and here I am again.  However I have yet  to establish exactly what's what so there will be a delay in responding as I want to go over everything but with your help I will be back!

Thanks again for your encouragement, :-[

Sorry about delay in continuing the wallpaper saga but things have been a bit hectic.  However I'm back but with no good news.  I have checked everything out but the wallpaper changer still does not work - except perhaps on boot-up when I find it has reverted to P6 wallpaper, every time and always to P6.

In addition the 'Set as wallpaper' option when opening a picture file does not work (it used to).  I can only conclude the two methods of changing the wallpaper automatically conflict in some way (I have not deleted/un-installed anything, perhaps I need to) or I've got something corrupted somehow.

Perhaps a 100% fresh install is needed?

Just had a further thought.  Could the problem be anything to do with my decision to install the 64 bit version which I did because I plan on increasing the memory to 8 GB and as I understand it 32 bit OS is limited to 4 GB?

Also if I do a wholly fresh install would it be better to go 32 bit rather than continue with the 64 bit version?  P6 64 is in fact my first 64 bit installation, previous Lubuntu installations have always been 32 bit.

Nope, nothing to do with 32bit Vs 64bit .. and nothing to do with the two methods conflicting (they don't because ALL methods for changing the wallpaper change the same single line in dconf so are effectively doing the same thing.

Are you making some change to your system that stops the nemo file manager from controlling the desktop ?

Are you saying the wallpaper DOES change, but reverts on reboot ?

is this a LiveCD/LiveUSB ?

Thanks for ruling out '32 v 64' and conflicts between change methods.

I have not made any changes to 'nemo' that I'm aware of unless my 'cairo-dock' excursion did so and did not reverse them when I removed it.

Sorry I did not express myself  clearly on what actually does happen to the wallpaper so I will try again: The only way to change the wallpaper is from the menu 'Accessories', 'Wallpapers'.  Right clicking on a photo and selecting 'Set as  Wallpaper' does not work (it used to) but if I put the same photos in the P6 'Wallpapers' file, and only that file, I can select it from the menu ok but no auto-change happens regardless of time.  More puzzling perhaps is that when re-booting after a shutdown the previously set wallpaper has reverted to the default P6 wallpaper!

Hence the suggestion that a full clean install may be the solution.

P.S. - Forgot to say that P6 is installed on Dell laptop

OK then, a bit of troubleshooting....
(it sounds like you don't have permission to write to your dconf user settings file .. or it's corrupt)

Does:
Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file:///usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers/Peppermint-Five.jpg"change your wallpaper to the Peppermint five wallpaper ?

and what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
whoamiand
Code: [Select]
ls -l ~/.configand
Code: [Select]
ls -l ~/.config/dconf/user

Can you log off, then log onto the guest account and let me know if you're able to change the wallpaper normally in the guest account

Yes, the option to set any photo as wallpaper works fine but reverts to P6 only when I switch back to me 'Carlos'.

OK, run:
Code: [Select]
mv ~/.config/dconf/user ~/.config/usernow log off/on again.

Now does wallpaper changing work ?

Fantastic Guys, I did what you said, including two extra re-boots to be sure,  and yes, the previously selected wallpaper was still there but no auto change.  Strangely, on the desktop were a number of shortcuts from the original installation but none of them worked so I deleted them all and got my clean desktop back.

I was just going to tell you that and wait for further instructions but decided to be adventurous and check if the two changers were actually there!  Bingo, the Crontab file option was there but no last line!  The other changer was not there at all so that explained why that one did not work.  I decided to for the the Crontab option so I added the extra line to the cron file etc etc and low and behold everything is now working.  Wonderful stuff, thank you so much!

So a great big thanks to everyone involved and for your patience. :)
