I know the fixes to get Broadcom Wifi running have been iterated ad infinitum, but of all the fixes out there, this is the only one that's worked on my old Dell Inspiron 1420. Seems to be agnostic as to what Broadcom version you have.

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
