Kodak esp 1.2 Printer Driver (again!) [SOLVED]
« on: April 21, 2014, 06:09:43 pm »
I tried to install this printer last year on my Peppermint Ice installation with mixed results. Sometimes it would work, mostly it didn't as was detailed on the old PeppermintOs forum. Anyway my old Hp F4200 printer has been getting slightly erratic in its old age and very often struggles to pull the paper through resulting in lots of errors and messing about.

Well I threatened to bin the Kodak printer at the time but I put it in a cupboard just in case ::) Today I dusted it off and connected it up to try. After a few false starts it is now printing at 600dpi in colour. I looked on t'interweb for any info, my logic being it is 6 months since I last played with it and surely there would be more development done by now. I ended up using the "KODAK HERO 9.1 AiO" driver after reading a post on the Ubuntu forum and it is working quite well. From pressing the "Print" button to actually printing is just a few seconds, the paper pulls down immediately and there is a slight delay of 3-4 seconds as the job gets processed and printed. It is no slower than the Hp.

As usual I will report any anomalies but I've printed half a dozen pages without problem so far. :D

Kodak is billed as using far less ink than most other printers but I understood it would not run on Linux.  Glad to hear that it does.  Thanks and be sure that you do keep us posted.   ;)

Another quick update. I printed direct from two different websites today with no problem. There was a slight delay whilst data was downloading but not unduly so and the info printed directly as seen on screen. :)

Ok I'll mark it as SOLVED but as yet I haven't tried copying/scanning and will update on those features over the next few days.

As thought the scanner doesn't work but looking at damig's post about his Epsom I ran:

sudo sane-find-scanner
[sudo] password for d:

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x040a [Eastman Kodak Company], product=0x406a [KODAK ESP 1.2 AiO]) at libusb:001:003
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.
d@d-desktop ~ $ scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

I thought this was a bit odd as it found the scanner on the first command but nothing on the second. :-\ Although it says it was probably detected.

Usb but I've been doing a bit of reading and I think the latest version of sane is required. The latest version updated to Peppermint Ice from the repo is not the very latest available.

And what's wrong with Peppermint Ice?!! :D :) Actually once I realized this I also have Peppermint 3 which runs a later version of Sane so am looking at getting the scanner working over there now.

I can see over the next 20 years or so I am going to have to give Ice up. :'( :( >:(
