It would be a lot more "well known" in the Linux world if it was in the Ubuntu repos, but I gather it was removed due to nobody stepping up and offering to maintain it through the full 5 years LTS life cycle

Sure it is. and the IRC plug-in is great as well. A lot of IRC websites are designed for Windows in such a way that clicking some particular link launches mIRC directly and goes into the channel. I couldn't do that on firefox or chrome. none of them could launch neither pidgin nor empathy (on elementary os). but then when I tried to open the same link with SeaMonkey on puppy Linux, it immediately launched the ChatZilla plug-in which is so cool. And not to mention how speedy and reliable the email client is. it renders the emails in html format and it also saves disk space and RAM

Hi sk_sarma,

You can do this with Firefox (I do not use Chrome enough to bother trying this, but it is probably similar). For example, I have the IRC program client called HexChat installed. To get it to open when I click on an IRC link in Firefox I did the following:

1. Click on the Firefox "hamburger" button (in the upper right corner).

2. Click on the button named Preferences.

3. In the tab that then opens, look on the left edge and click on the button named Applications.

4. Find the entry irc in the right pane listing and click on it.

5. Then to the right of that irc entry click on whatever appears (unless your IRC client is already there, you will probably just see something like "Always ask"; if your client is already present, you should not need to do anything more).

6. Select the IRC client you wish from the list that opens or click on the entry "Use other..." and select your IRC client.

7. Close the Preferences tab and you should be finished.

Do you mean that "smile icon" on firefox which says "Start a conversation"? I thought it is some firefox community chat. so i had it removed from there using the customization feature. :-\

NO .. he's talking about specifying which application opens a given link type in Firefox

Hi sk_sarma,

I mean (when I say "hamburger") the three horizontal lines stacked on top of each other in the upper right hand corner of your Firefox window. Clicking on it will open the Firefox menu.

;D took a few minutes for me to figure it out. yes I can see an applications menu in preferences. It allows one to launch IRC with an in-built application. :) It still doesn't show pidgin as an option though. I have installed "xChat" which appears there, along with something called mibbit

Maybe try "Use Other" and point it at the pidgin binary (/usr/bin/pidgin).

Perhaps that'll work. I wonder why I never paid much attention to this menu before. :D

Hopefully, nobody minds that I post in this Seamonkey thread after successfully implementing scifidude79's prior instructions... been trying to live without a dedicated email client on my new home built desktop, but it's apparent i need Seamonkey back in my life... bumping this back up in case anyone else is also in need.

Will also bump this Seamonkey thred once again as my week of testing the latest official build of Seamonkey has gone without a hitch... 2.49.1 was released on 10/30 or so, hasn't made it to Ubuntuzilla, but the 64 bit .deb is available as a "Contributed Build" at the bottom of the page  here... https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ 32 bit is the link at the top. For those of you who like to play with nightly releases, I'd advise staying away.... for the moment

:)  Giving thanks to scifidude79 & bumping this back up again as I'm ready to recover my e'mail archives now... Seamonkey has a recent release bumping it up to 2.49.3 for all of you who have fond memories of the Netscape Navigator days...

Hmmm, have always heard it referred to as the pancake menu... perhaps we can now label it the flapjacks stack now?
