Minimal BASH Error
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:28:56 pm »
So, I'm working with a Peppermint 5 still. Mainly because I have not been able to download version 6 yet. I'm am able to boot from the USB just fine. I go through the install procedure and try to boot from the hard drive and end up getting the GRUB error. I tried Gparted boot repair and also reformatting my HDD with MSDOS. Still nothing. I switched my mobo to boot legacy and uefi, nothing.

My mobo is an MSI Z97 Krait. Can anyone help? I tried installing another Ubuntu version and the same thing happened. I really don't want to go to windows. If anyone wants screenshots or other info, it will be tomorrow morning before I can get them.

Hi Squeaker and welcome to the forum, I'm gonna send you a personal message but can you answer a few questions....

is Peppermint 5 on this same PC ? .. and if so which architecture 32bit or 64bit ?

have you disable secureboot ?

have you tried installing the 32bit version with secureboot disabled and in legacy BIOS mode ?

Please see your personal messages.

[EDIT]

I'm going to guess here that the problem is that your hard drive has a GPT partition table .. can you boot to a LiveCD/LiveUSB, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo parted --listIn the returned output, does it say the "Partition Table" type (for your hard drive, probably /dev/sda) is msdos or gpt ?

I have been running Peppermint 5 OS from a 64bit Peppermint stick. I have not tried the 32bit version, but I did install the 32bit version of Xubuntu and the computer displayed the same message at boot. I have never actually had an OS work on this computer off of the hard drive.

I have searched in the user manual and online and I am unable to find how to disable secureboot, or if it is even an option on this motherboard.

Model: ATA WDC WD1001X06X-0 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 120GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: gpt

Number  Start   End    Size    File system     Name  Flags
 1      1049kB  538MB  537MB   fat32                 boot
 2      538MB   112GB  111GB   ext4
 3      112GB   120GB  8469MB  linux-swap(v1)

I thought that after I did the reformat to through GParted that my hard drive would be msdos format?

OK, we can do this 2 ways

a) We can use GParted from the LiveCD/LiveUSB to write an MSDOS partition table .. the drive should then be okay for ANY distro
or
b) I can PM you a link to a custom ISO that should install without issue even with a GPT partition table and/or secureboot, it would also allow you to install Peppermint alongside Win8/Win10 as a dual boot setup if you wanted.
(this is a version of the next Peppermint 6 respin which is due for release soon, but it's missing a feature that I can't/won't mention yet .. this new feature will eventually come through as an update though)

Which route would you like to follow ?

[EDIT]

To anyone else reading this .. please don't ask what the new feature will be, then I won't have to say "wait and see"

in fact if anyone asks, I'll not respond :)
