P6 no longer connecting wifi (Solved)
« on: August 29, 2015, 04:47:18 pm »
about ten days ago P6 started coming up with broken connection, I found this out this morning when i went to turn it on and do updates...  My daughters solution to the no wifi problem was to just use her other laptop and not tell daddy about it...  LOL  kids...  ;)
anyhoo this is the dell mini 10 which when I install p6 I have to connect it via ethernet and download a driver for it to work...
what I am thinking is the driver was possibly updated by my kid, and then the next boot was no longer working...
this is the code i was given for P5 and it did work for a while in P6 also...
Code: [Select]
For Peppermint 5, connect to your router via an ethernet cable and run:
Code: [Select]

sudo apt install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer firmware-b43legacy-installer linux-firmware-nonfree

wireless should work now.

Reinstall firmware-b43-installer:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall firmware-b43-installer
then REBOOT.

Then see if you get any output from:
Code: [Select]
rfkill list

Wifi is working again after doing the driver reinstall...
I wonder what made it stop working in the first place?      :-\

Reinstall firmware-b43-installer:
Code: [Select]

sudo apt-get install --reinstall firmware-b43-installer

then REBOOT.

Then see if you get any output from:

Code: [Select]
rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: compal-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: compal-bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Aha!  The ol' forensics guessing game, if you will.

Have you tidied up the drive recently?

Sometimes, when one 'cleans' and 'autoremoves' a meta package (for instance) - first time, no problem - second time, it starts cleaning and removing dependencies for the meta package because the meta package has been removed, and away we go.  It's a downhill slope.

Given enough 'cleaning' and 'autoremoving', one will be met by a black screen or simply a command line at boot.  And, reinstalling this n' that will usually restore the dependencies that were inadvertently removed.  Diagnostics is a process of elimination, hence the request for additional information (above).

'apt-get', 'aptitude', 'synaptic' et cetera warns users, all along the way, what they are about to remove, but...

Anyway, just a thought.  Happens all the time, and I'm as guilty of it as anyone.  I like it when things break.   ;D

well since my 11 year old uses the machine only, chances of her cleaning it are slim and nill, since she only knows how to boot it, open firefox, and go to her websites...   LOL...
I am still lost as to what happened on it...
If I would not have picked it up out of boredom to see if she was running her updates like i taught her to do, I never would have known it wasn't working, cause like I said in the first post, her way of fixing the broken wifi was to put it on the shelf and never use it again, and use her other laptop...  LOL   :)

I wonder what made it stop working in the first place?

No idea .. could be any one of a million things

new driver install that didn't finish correctly
new driver install onto bad sectors of the HDD
old drivers corrupted for some reason
kernel update so a third party module needed rebuilding
PEBKAC
etc
etc.
and so on and so on and.......
