need advice regarding peppermint 6 or lubuntu
« on: August 26, 2015, 04:39:32 pm »
I was using Peppermint 6 for a while and loved it! This forum is awesome as well. I tried Lubuntu 14.04 as well and also like it a lot! I'm torn :)

What are the advantages of using Peppermint 6 aside from ICE. Are there resource advantages etc.....?

These are the computers I am running Lubuntu on:

Lenovo T60 2GB RAM
Dell 1520 2GB RAM
Dell 3000 Desktop 2GB RAM

I have the computers with a seperate home directory so it is easy to install a new OS. BTW I gave up on the multiple distros on a single machine that I posted about recently. I decided to focus on one distro and make it work for me! After all that's what linux is all about.

No, there's little in it between the two as far as resource footprint goes, and those 3 machines should be well capable of either .. so take your pick, it's really a personal preference thing ;)

OK, if you want more (ice aside)....

Do you prefer Red or Blue ?

Do you like the default apps in Lubuntu, or do you want to choose your own ?

Do you prefer nemo to pcmanfm ?

Do you prefer Xfwm4 (with its built in compositing) to pcmanfm (without, but you can always add compton) ?

Do you prefer our forum to the Ubuntu one ?

Do you prefer distros that start with a P more than L ?

As I said it's all about personal taste .. take your pick .. at the end of the day you can always turn Lubuntu into Peppermint and vice versa .. so pick your starting point.
(in fact you could turn them both into Ubuntu or Mint if you could be bothered)

If you're after someone to tell you which to choose .. PEPPERMINT obviously  :D

If it was me, I'd run Peppermint on my portables, and GS on my desktop.   8)

Is nemo more stable than the version of pcmanfm that comes with lubuntu?

I just want something simple fast and just works. I'm not into composting. I want has much simple as I can get in a Ubuntu distro.

It's more feature rich .. they're both pretty "stable".

Peppermint!  I swear, I'm unbiased.   :P

Actually, I never got into Lubuntu.  I don't know why.  It's not like it's a bad distribution or anything, but I'm not sure it has that *it* factor that Peppermint has.

Well, I caved (again). I installed Peppermint 6 on my Lenovo T60 and so far so good. Seems to be a more coherent distro than Lubuntu if that makes any sense plus the Peppermint forum is excellent! :)

Speaking of forums, one thing I don't like about Lubuntu is that they don't have their own forums.  You have to go to the Ubuntu forums, which have support for all of the "official" -untus except Kubuntu, which has its own forums.  So, it can be harder to get help targeted at your specific distro.  That's as opposed to here where you get support specifically for Peppermint.
