home network no longer accessible [mysteriously RESOLVED]
« on: August 23, 2015, 04:04:41 pm »
I've been easily accessing the windows home network ever since upgrading my laptop to peppermint6. No additional configuration on my part had been necessary. Recently my other half's two computers from which the network originates upgraded to Win10 ... Now I am no longer able to access the network from peppermint6...

Reading thru the other network posts and browsing around other linux forums, suggests I need to install samba. I was surprised I have been accessing the Win7 and Win8 networks without it. Samba now installed, I seem to only be able to set up shares from my own laptop, rather than being able to access shares from our home network.

Nope, don't ask me to ditch other half's computers., since useful trading software is unavailable for linux.

LOL  :D

It's my guess the problem lies in the Win10 upgrade .. it's probably either

a) changed the workgroup
or more likely
b) blocked sharing by disabling file and printer sharing and network discovery

In Win10 go to
Menu > Settings > Network & Internet > Change advanced sharing options
and make sure there are ticks in:-

Turn on network discovery
and
Turn on file and printer sharing

You might also want to set:-

Turn off password protected sharing

under the "All Networks" heading

if you had to change those settings you MAY need to reboot all PC's before the changes are picked up across the network

other half reports that all of those options are turned on and enabled... i am intermittently able to see all networked computers and access their files and folders, without any samba configuration on my part, just as i was able to do before the Win10 upgrade and before i installed samba... so i guess i'll chalk another one up to being mysteriously resolved

My guess would be an update fixed something, possibly on Windows' end.  There was a Samba update a while back, but that was before you posted this thread.  Oh well, at least it's fixed.  That's what matters.   ;D

Great stuff, glad to hear it resolved itself Spence :)

Networking, no matter how hard they try to make it easier it still ends up as a black art.
