I certainly did the first of those.

Sadly, I have got to the point where I simply can't risk messing-up the drivers now that the Nouveau one seems to be working (although I would love to understand why that was failing to find all the resolution modes); I just hope it stays that way.
This is one of a batch of laptops I have been refurbishing - and we will be taking them to Tanzania on Wednesday - so you probably understand my reluctance to risk upsetting anything at this late stage. Sorry!

It does sound as if you are not expecting to find any broader problem - so it may just have to be 'one of those things' that is never fully resolved. Maybe next time I get a machine with nVidia graphics I'll find out more.

Many thanks for all the help on various topics - at least I'll go quiet now!

Nvidia makes some of the nicest graphics chipsets on the planet, but they come with their own set of issues, particularly for those of us who use Linux.
