default browser doesn't change (SOLVED)
« on: April 25, 2014, 06:42:35 pm »
I have 'google chrome' Version 34.0.1847.132 as a default browser in `preferred applications` but that doesn't change how the system behaves: Chromium is in the `menu`, all the applications that wakeup the default browser - Chromium is started.
nothing personal, but I had an issue with youtube videos not playing in Chromium

Go into Settings in Chrome browser and scroll down until you see "Default Browser."   You can choose to have Chrome as default there.   :)

Okay, here you go.....

Code: [Select]
sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
Run that command in your terminal and you'll see your options.

Why not get Chromium to use Chrome's pepperflash.:
http://peppermintos.net/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=6176

You do realise that web shortcuts created with Ice will NOT open in Chrome ?

FYI...

To get firefox 100% recognised as the default I had to

a) change it in menu > Preferences > Preferred applications

b) change it in "update-alternatives" for the gnome-www-browser alternative

c) change it in "update-alternatives" for the x-www-browser alternative

d) add these lines in ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

[Added Associations]
x-scheme-handler/http=firefox.desktop;chromium-browser.desktop;google-chrome.desktop;
text/html=firefox.desktop;
video/x-flv=firefox.desktop;chromium-browser.desktop;google-chrome.desktop;
application/x-php=firefox.desktop;chromium-browser.desktop;google-chrome.desktop;

[Default Applications]
x-scheme-handler/http=firefox.desktop
text/html=firefox.desktop

By far the easiest method would be to just get Chromium to use Pepperflash instead of the Adobe version .. then you pretty much have Chrome anyway ;)

Sure you can .. most things can be done through the GUI, it's just easier to post how through the command line ;)

You can't copy/paste GUI instructions ;)

Besides which, none of this is really "coding"

I fell a sleep, sorry guys
I ran the sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser:
Spoiler (click here to view / hide)
damig@damig-Satellite-A75 ~ $ sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
[sudo] password for damig:
There are 2 choices for the alternative x-www-browser (providing /usr/bin/x-www-browser).

  Selection    Path                           Priority   Status
------------------------------------------------------------
* 0            /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable   200       auto mode
  1            /usr/bin/chromium-browser       40        manual mode
  2            /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable   200       manual mode

Press enter to keep the current choice
  • , or type selection number:
[close]
it looks like I have installed 2 chromes (it's possible)?

No you haven't installed it twice .. the top line tells you which of the 2 underneath is set as the AUTOMATIC option .. ie. the one that will be used if you don't manually specify one.

It's already set to Chrome.

OK you have 2 options here (if you want to still be able to use Ice for creating web shortcuts)

a) ditch Chrome and fix the flashplayer in Chromium
or
b) ditch Chromium and install my edited version of Ice (ice-chrome) that makes web shortcuts for Chrome instead of Chromium .. this will entail removing all currently installed Ice SSB shortcuts and recreating them in ice-chrome.
(not a huge job, but one I thought I'd better mention)

So which road do you want to take ?

Do you want instructions for removing Chrome and fixing the flashplayer in Chromium ?

no PCNetSpec, I had all I need in the previous posts. Thank you guys much!
As I said, nothing personal about the browser and was not aware Chromium is entangled with the OS. I liked it at first look.
