Limited functionality after update (Peppermint 6) (SOLVED)
« on: August 10, 2015, 12:25:01 am »
Hello Peppermint-Forum,

i did a fresh install on my lenovo T61 just yesterday and everything worked fine until i applied all the latest updates. After a reboot, i can not install additional languages and synaptic does not work anymore. I can enter my password, synaptic pops up for like a second and then immediately closes without giving any error message.

I worked around this by reinstalling again, then deactivating all updates higher than level 3. But that of course means i am leaving out security updates. Is there a known fix for this?

Hi Borsti, welcome to the Peppermint Forum.  It's good to have you aboard  ;).  Have you tried doing a full update from the terminal?  Open a terminal window with the following keystrokes: Ctrl+Alt+t.  Enter the following commands in sequence.  Enter your user password when asked and follow the on screen instructions:
Code: [Select]
apt update && apt upgradefollowed by:
Code: [Select]
apt dist-upgradeIf there are any errors, please post them to the forum.  You will need to reboot your machine.  Could you please also run the following command and post the output back to the forum?
Code: [Select]
inxi -FAfter your issue has been resolved.  It is advisable to reactivate levels 4 and 5 in the update manager.
Backup! Backup! Backup! If you're missing any of these -  you ain't Backed Up!

Hi Borsti,

First of all, this is not a "known problem" so there is not a "known fix". If it occurs again, you should try starting Synaptic from a terminal window. That way you can often see error messages that you otherwise would not see. If you see error messages in the terminal then copy them and post them here on the forum so that a solution to your problem can more easily be sought.

Regards,

You probably updated the dependency of an important system file, but not everything.  It's not your fault, it's the way the update commands work.  apt-get upgrade leaves things out.  The command Andy gave you (apt-get dist-upgrade) upgrades everything, even things that the regular update command leaves out.

Since this is now solved, please edit your original post and add (Solved) to the post title and then save it.  Thanks.
