password required to turn off machine?
« on: July 29, 2015, 09:45:52 am »
last night after a long session of importing and sorting my email archive, i was logging off when i was presented with an entirely new request for a password in order to shut down my laptop... where did this arrive from?  :-\

i guess i'm getting cranky in my old age... hating on my new cell phone (samsung galaxy note 4), wanting the old one back (nokia 1520)... then now this... perhaps i should open my mind and let someone explain how requiring my password in order to shut down my laptop is a good thing?

EDIT just shut down my laptop, and was not presented with the password request... hmmm now i'm creeped out  :o

Technically, shutting down and rebooting both require Root permission.  Don't ask me why, it's some weird Ubuntu thing, I think.  Though, the lxsession-logout program that we use for logging out, shutting down, etc. is programmed to do it without asking for a password.  Why did it ask you for one in this instance?  Who knows?  It's probably just one of those weird things that happen.  Unless it happens again, I wouldn't worry about it.

only reason i asked was, i've been getting into the habit of plugging my samsung galaxy note 4 into my laptop to recharge, and poking around in it's file structure in an attempt to familiarize myself with the phone and find reasons to like a device i've hated since day one... this morning i read about not one but two android vulnerabilities... here: http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/07/950-million-android-phones-can-be-hijacked-by-malicious-text-messages/ and here: (hmmm, guess i'll find it later and edit this post)

found it http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/06/new-exploit-turns-samsung-galaxy-phones-into-remote-bugging-devices/

so the random password request has me wondering if i've introduced some crapola into my system... i do run Avira on my android...

That I have no answer to.  I don't know if any viruses or malware that affect Android can affect other Linux systems.  Mark or somebody else more knowledgeable than me is going to have to answer that one.

To me, it sounds like a freak occurrence.  But, then again, what do I know?  ;)

Maybe something was going on in the background that couldn't be interrupted without root permission .. impossible to say now ;)
(though there MAY be something in the logs if you can be bothered to trawl through them)
WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root' .. logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.
