Cell-phone modem/dongle [SOLVED]
« on: July 29, 2015, 04:02:38 am »
I wonder if anyone can confirm if Peppermint (6) will operate fine with a cell-phone modem/dongle to provide internet connectivity?
I can't see why it shouldn't, but haven't got one to try and am taking some older computers abroad - and they want that facility, so it would be nice to be 'sure'.
Thanks for any advice/comment/help.

Really depends on the hardware, but if it works under Ubuntu it should work under Peppermint.

Have you got the dongle with you ?

if you insert it, then run:
Code: [Select]
lsusbcan you post back what was returned in the kernel, and we'll try to get further info based on its vendor:product ID string.

As I said, no I have not got one to try - hence the question.

They will normally have been used under WinXP - the question is are they likely just to work on PM6 ?
I appreciate it is a general question, very non-specific, I was hoping a few folk might be able to share experience.

Most of them will work, but its impossible to know for sure without knowing what the hardware is.

I've tried 3 now and they all worked in previous versions of Peppermint/Ubuntu/etc. .. but that's not to say they all will.

Great - that is really helpful.
There is no single answer to 'which hardware' , but it sounds like there is a fighting chance with most, which is all I could hope to hear.
Many thanks. :)

Edit your original post, change the subject line to include (Sovled) or (Closed) or whatever and save it.

Just one last question on this - are they likely to need additional drivers?
That could be a problem if they are the only means of connecting to the internet in rural Tanzania!!

All 3 I used worked "out of the box" with no additional drivers required .. but again I suppose it depends on the the dongle make/model, there can be no guarantees here unless you can provide the make/model and ISP ;)
