Grub problem after install PM6
« on: July 12, 2015, 12:33:51 am »
Hi,

I am totally new to Peppermint Linux.
I need some help fixing the installation.
I downloaded the iso file, made a bootable USB with Unetbootin and installed the PM6 on my netbook choosing the option to wipe the disk of the previous system and install PM on whole the disk. It all went smoothly.
However, after the installation when I removed my USB stick and turned on the computer it goes into

GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9ubuntu1.3

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. for the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.

....and stops there.
Using some of the tricks I could find on the internet I found out that I can launch PM6 writing at the grub line:
grub> set  pager=1
grub> set root=(hd0,2)
grub> linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-37-generic root=/dev/sda2
grub> initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-37-generic
grub> boot

and it does work every time. But how do i do that automatic? It just sounds ridiculous to do that every time.
Thanks

Is this a UEFI dual boot configuration ?

and can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l

[EDIT]

Have you tried simply booting the way you mentioned above, then in the running system opening a terminal and running:
Code: [Select]
sudo grub-install /dev/sda?

Hey,
yes - it is a rather new netbook (HP Pavilion 10.1 TouchScreen) but i used to install numerous linux distributions like kubuntu on it and it ran with no problem.
Not sure if that would be a doubleboot as during the installation i chose to erase the disk and install the system on whole disk.

The other thing:
sudo grub-install /dev/sda

as you said - returned: No errors found.

But it still stops at grub line during launching the computer

The image you posted above doesn't display for anyone other than you .. you need to be logged onto your dropbox account for it to display.

Either put it in the "Public" folder on dropbox, then provide the link between IMG tags

or host it on IMGUR:
http://imgur.com/
then post the IMG link

That said, images aren't searchable, so it would be better if you just copied the text from the terminal and pasted it into your next posting between CODE tags

It seems you have a GPT partition table, are you game for formatting the HDD with an msdos style partition table (which will erase the drive as a consequence) then reinstalling Peppermint ?

Absolutely yes. There is basically nothing on that computer anyway. If you just told me how to do that - I will be more than happy to do that

OK, boot to a Peppermint LiiveCD/LiveUSB

once at the Live session desktop, fire up GParted
menu > System Tools > GParted

in GParted, make sure  /dev/sda is selected on the right of the toolbar.

then select
Device > Create Partition Table...

when prompted select "msdos style parttion table" and continue

once done, close GParted, then run the Peppermint installer from the desktop icon.

Note:-

When you select Device > Create Partition Table... you may be told GParted cannot continue because a partition is currently in use .. in that case, one at a time right-click on the partitions in the list and select "Unmount" (or Swapoff" in the case of the linux-swap partition), then try Device > Create Partition Table... again.

Ok, but to clarify, by "boot to LiveUSB" you mean :

-boot from USB
-choose try Peppermint Linux without installing
-and then follow your instructions?

Boot from the LiveUSB stick or LiveCD you created earlier (whatever you used for the earlier installation) and select "Try Peppermint"

Did all of the above. Just finished installing. Resetted the computer and it finished.... at grub line again.  :(
The funny thing is that fdisk states a GPT partition again. Somehow it did not change it to msdos

You could try using boot-repair:

Hi puls,

Also, when you did the LiveUSB reformat of the HDD to msdos using GParted, did you remember to apply the change and actually reformat the HDD? Did the process itself then return any error messages?

Regards,
