End session button is gone ... [SOLVED]
« on: July 06, 2015, 02:46:04 am »
A stupidity led to removing the 'End Session' button in the LXDE panel. The button in the right upper corner.

I can't get it back ... HELP!

I tried to get it back with the panel options, but it seems this option, this button ('End Session') is not available, only the options from the menu groups.

Thank you in advance ...

It's a custom application launcher setting.  I'm trying to remember how to set it up.  Give me a few minutes to see if I can figure it out.

Hi lswarte,

Open the panel file with in a terminal with:

Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel

and at the bottom paste the following into the file:

Code: [Select]
Plugin {
    type = launchbar
    Config {
        Button {
            id=peppermint-logout.desktop
        }
    }
}

save the file, close the terminal, log-out then log in again. It should be there now. If not, reboot and see if it is there.

If you have gedit set to make backup files, then be sure to remove the backup of the panel file. In a terminal again type this to remove it (if it is not there, no harm will be done):

Code: [Select]
rm -v ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel~

DO NOT FORGET the ~ at the end!! Otherwise you will remove the current (good) panel file!

That shutdown button is one of the first things I delete after a fresh install.  I can't understand why it's in that position or why it's even in the panel in the first place.  It drives me nuts because it's right next to the Close window button when a window is maximised .  It's like an appendix or an after thought that clutters up the panel.  For me, it's a habit, I only use the menu > logout or Ctrl+Alt+del.  Yup, that shutdown button always ends up in the bin  >:(.

After editing the panel config file, be sure to delete any backup file that may have been created .. so run:
Code: [Select]
rm -v ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel~

another option to manually editing the panel config file would be to completely reset the panel to defaults by running:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Peppermint/panels/panel ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel
then restart the panel with:
Code: [Select]
lxpanelctl restart
BE AWARE .. you'll need to move the panel back to the top after doing this

That shutdown button is one of the first things I delete after a fresh install.  I can't understand why it's in that position or why it's even in the panel in the first place.

It's a leftover from when pretty much all Linux's has the shutdown button on the right  of the panel  .. I'm sure I read somewhere that when someone tried to remove it got TONS of complaints
(personally I remove it too .. limited panel real estate on netbooks dictates no wasted space via function duplication)

It drives me nuts because it's right next to the Close window button when a window is maximised .  It's like an appendix or an after thought that clutters up the panel.

Erm .. it's SUPPOSED to be bottom right, so I fail to see how it's next to the window close button unless YOU put it there (or you have some very weird windows decorations) ;)

Sounds like Andy moved the panel to the top.

Personally, I leave the panel on the bottom.  Actually, Peppermint is the only distro where I leave the panel on the bottom.  I even move my winders taskbar (at work) to the top.

Truthfully, I never use the shutdown button(s) in Peppermint.  I shut the lid on my mobile devices to 'suspend' and alt-ctrl-delete to 'shut down'.

Anyway, if it bugs you, it's easy enough to remove the button - just not quite as easy to get it back again.   :)

That's the other thing I do after a fresh install - move the panel to the top  ;D.  It's a "drop down" over a "pop up" thing  ;D!!

Heh, I've never seen the point of it either.  In fact, I had to boot my Peppermint 6 test install on VirtualBox to find the thing to help the original poster, because my regular install doesn't have that.  ;)  But, some people love it.  And, since it's much easier to remove than to get back in Peppermint, it makes sense to have it there for people who love it.  The rest of us can delete it.

Another thing I don't see the point of is having a pager on your panel or having multiple desktops. but that's probably just the residue of the longtime Windows user in me.  That's another thing I remove promptly after installation.

I never thought of that option.  That works really well.  It just goes to show how customizable the LXPanel is.  There should be something to suit everyone's tastes and requirements  ;).

Hi scifidude79,

Multiple desktops a Windoze residue ?? M$Windoze never had multiple desktops. But now as Windoze 10 approaches I have read that they will be finally getting multiple desktops.

Or did you not mean M$ Windoze ?

Anyway, I use multple workspaces all the time. One I  use for my work programs (spreadsheets, writer, etc.), one is for web-browsing, or web-site updating etc., another is for working with music files (editing, creating etc.) and another is for graphics work. But a workspace indicator is not really that useful to me.
