Does your keyboard have a separate Sysrq/PrtSc key .. or is it assigned to a combination such as Fn+Home ?

I have four keys, from left to right, above my numbers pad.

They are:  HOME/SYSRQ,  END/PRTSC,  PGUP/BREAK, &  PGDN/PAUSE.

Thank you.

So to access the SysRq function of the Home/SysRq key you'd also have to hold the Fn (function key) ?

I don't know!   To be honest, I've never used these keys before in my life.  The first time I've ever used them was by following your instructions.  I know your instructions work like a charm on my neighbor's old ex-XP Dell Dimension 3000, but these Toshiba laptops that my wife and I own are completely different animals.v

Are you thinking I need to hold the function key down too when following the shutdown command?  I'll give it a try.

Thank you.

P.S.

About 30 minutes later:

I'll be darned, PCNetSpec, holding down that FN key, and following the shutdown instuctions, brought me to my GNU Grub Screen!  (Now this is the Toshiba laptop with the Hitachi external hard drive attached to the USB 3 port.) What do you bet this command would have shut down my wife's Toshiba laptop that had had Ubuntu's Unity desktop installed!

Thank you very much, PCNetSpec.  What a wonderful discovery today.

Now I need to go back and remove that particular post.  It was my ignorance, and not the keycoding of Toshiba, that was my problem here.

Thank you.

Okay, I'm beginning to get the knack of this.  This thread has helped me a great deal, and I hope it will help others with the same issue in the future.

PCNetSpec, thank you for taking the time to figure out where I may have been going wrong with our laptop computers.

Wow, what a difference one little key stroke can make.

There will be no more cold power offs around here!

Thank you,

Your file system will no doubt reward you for that, but the reward will go unnoticed ;)

Good point.  We tend to not think about it until something breaks.  Maybe we should start a
Peppermint Admiration Society.  Or, maybe, we already have........ :-\
