I usually pick up things like this at Willy's AKA Goodwill. 

I'm currently using an ancient Que! USB 2 CD-RW.  It's in mint condition, built like a tank, and will probably last me a lifetime.  Price: USD $12.99 + tax.

If it was me, I'd probably order a new generic burner online.  For instance (picked at random): Something like this.

Most drives are plug and play, so it shouldn't be an issue.  That one VinDSL linked to is plug and play and plugs into the USB port, so I would think it would work fine in Linux.

Edit:  Here's from a review from September of last year on that drive:
