Have you tried the CLI programme, youtube-dl to rip YouTube material?

Yeah i have it installed and that's what i use now it's a great tool and probably does more in as much as it can download from sites other than youtube, but as far as youtube videos were concerned it was just so easy with smplayer no opening terminal, typing or pasting url's just right click and download

the problem I've found with video downloaders (youtube in particular) is that there's a moving target so just last week youtube-dl stopped working because youtube changed  the code so in response the youtube-dl team update their code which is fine but the problem is they don't update the version in the repos (which no longer works) so I had no way of updating

the only way i could get around it was to install a pip version which I can now update at any time

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs then you're not quite grasping the situation

If you downloaded it from the repos an:
Code: [Select]
apt update
does the trick.  If you downloaded it from somewhere else.  This is the update code:
Code: [Select]
sudo youtube-dl -U

Edit: If you're experiencing problems updating the repo version.  Try installing this:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install python-pip -y && sudo pip install --upgrade youtube_dl

My too, it works great.  I just wasn't sure if you'd installed the extras to fix it  ;).

Still not convinced pip is the best method of installation here.

See:

I wouldn't add the webupd8 repos, too many packages in it .. but nothing stopping you getting the latest youtube-dl .deb file from there and installing it

I kinda agree but the problem as i see it is not the installation method it's keeping it updated and working, there's no ppa available for youtube-dl and because of the nature of the program it's not the program devs that are in control here it's youtube

so how else do you get around the problem ?
