Peppermint 6: HW Acceleration Problems with Radeon cards
« on: June 07, 2015, 04:55:29 pm »
Hi All

I need to use VDPAU in order to get HW acceleration on my Radeon HD 5XXX card. In order to do so, I need to install the package mesa-vdpau-drivers. But when trying to do so, something "funny" happens:

juan@SkyNet-Node ~ $ sudo apt-get install mesa-vdpau-drivers
[sudo] password for juan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libegl1-mesa libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libglamor0 libglapi-mesa
  libgles2-mesa libllvm3.4 libspice-server1 libwayland-egl1-mesa xserver-xorg
  xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-cirrus xserver-xorg-video-fbdev.....and lots of other stuff.

Suggested packages:
  libglide3 xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi xfonts-scalable firmware-linux

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libegl1-mesa-drivers-lts-utopic libegl1-mesa-lts-utopic libgbm1-lts-utopic
  libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-utopic libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-utopic
  libglapi-mesa-lts-utopic libgles1-mesa-lts-utopic libgles2-mesa-lts-utopic
  libopenvg1-mesa-lts-utopic libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-utopic
  libxatracker2-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-core-lts-utopic
  xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-input-evdev-lts-utopic
  xserver-xorg-input-mouse-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-lts-utopic
  xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse-lts-utopic xserver-xorg-input-wacom-lts-utopic
  ....and lots of other stuff.

So, this doesn't look like a "quick & normal" mesa-vdpau-driver installation.

Where all those xxxxxxx-lts-utopic packages come from? Isn't Peppermint6 based on Trusty?

Based on the Peppermint 6 release notes saying that improvements to the graphic stack were added, I suppose some code of utopic landed on Peppermint 6, but my sudo apt-get install command is trying to install a trusty mesa-vdpau-drivers

What would be the best course of action to solve this? I really need mesa-vdpau-drivers in order to solve the following error message:

kodi@SkyNet-Node /home/juan $ DISPLAY=:0 vdpauinfo
display: :0   screen: 0
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_r600.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Error creating VDPAU device: 1

Thanks !!!!

Kr

Max

@10i

you can certainly install it .. dunno if your card will make use of it as you don't mention what your card is ?

Yes, install mesa-vdpau-drivers-lts-utopic

Dunno if they'll be used unless you're using the proprietary drivers, but as I said it certainly can't hurt

Those are for Peppermint SIX only .. do not install them in earlier versions .. they require a different version.

I installed it, but how do I use it? My system says no proprietary drivers are installed.

Does it offer you any proprietary drivers in "Additional Drivers" ?

is this an AGP or PCIe card ?

or integrated into the motherboard ?

actually 10i, we're hijacking an active support topic of someone elses here .. can you strat a new topic mentioning your model of card again and answering the above questions

Please make it so it'd make sense to someone who hasn't seen this topic

TIA.
