iPod - what software do you use? <<Solved>>
« on: April 19, 2014, 11:27:55 am »
I have a 120 GB iPod classic, that I am trying to use "properly" on Linux. I run Peppermint 4 and have tried:

Gtkpod - hated the interface
Rythmbox - could not get it to add anything to my music library
Clementine - semi able to use it

I dual boot Windows XP, which I hope to soon remove. My 160 GB HDD has a 30 GB partition for Linux, with the rest being a swap partition and a large partition for Windows XP and my music / podcasts / audiobooks collection.

I have never been a fan of iTunes, but at least it was never difficult to use. Drag and drop mp3 files into it, connect iPod and it syncs.

Here is my question: What software do you use for your iPod (if you have one) or do you know of an easy way to do what I am trying to do? I even copied a few mp3 files into my Home/10i/Music folder and had mixed success.

I don't have to sync often, but would like to have all my media on the iPod, without needing Windows.

Hi 10i, maybe you should try GTKPod.  This is for use with iPods/iPhones.  It is in the depositories.  I've not used it but the reviews suggest it works well.   I hope this helps  :).

With clementine I have to select songs, right click them and click copy to ipod.

The songs are now on the ipod, but some of them now are called noname, instead of their proper names and the album art is missing.

I am probably doing it wrong.

Tried to see if I could get further with Clementine.

Now, every time I open the program music starts playing automatically. The stop button is greyed out, and if I click on play 2 songs play at the same time.

Now I feel like pulling my hair out again.

Rythmbox refuses to add files to the music library as it says there is a gstreamer plugin missing. Checked at the Software Center, and there are a lot of different plugins. Rythmbox shows a button I can click to install the missing plugin, a button which does nothing when I click it  >:(

Uninstalled and reinstalled Clementine, it still plays music automatically on startup that I can only turn off by exiting the program.

But I will push through and find a way  8)

If you go into Clementine's settings, Tools/Preferences/Behavior.  Make sure the. Resume Playback on Start box is not checked.  Quit Clementine and restart.  Fingers crossed and hope that fixes it  :).

OK, so I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras and now rhythymbox can play mp3 files and import my music library.

It crashes when I try to copy music to my iPod though.

I marked this solved, although it is not. I consider it solved.

When Rhythmbox crashed when it tried to sync my iPod, the songs on my ipod were corrupted. I booted into Windows and tried to restore my iPod. this was not available as itunes did not believe that I was online. I had to remove everything from my music library and then add it again.

My iPod works again at least, but at this point I can't afford to replace it, so I am going to stop trying.

Hi

Even though you have addressed this as solved, to answer your question, I have used aTunes, which worked with my Gen 2 iPod on Peppermint 2 a while ago , I am also about to try out quodlibet ... this is also in the repositories, as I have never seen this before, even in my searches, I read about it and it has potential, so I'd suggest looking into these two media apps and see if they suit your needs... (QuodLibet has format support for .MOD which is my video camera, hence my use) Good luck...

Seriously I wouldn't trust Linux and iPod/Pad/Phones.
(particularly newer ones with recent versions of iOS)

Every time Linux manages to support the new database format, Apple changes it breaking compatibility, and usually breaking all the iDevices that then try to sync using a Linux application (requiring a format of the iDevice.

So not so much a Linux issue .. more an Apple issue (Linux continues to work, but Apple just broke your iDevice).

Moral of the story .. either don't use overpriced (but shiney) Apple tat with Linux, or email Apple and complain about their lack of Linux support, and cross your fingers.

Its a good answer @PCNetSpec, I will put more media on my phone rather than constantly syncing my iPod.
