OK, I'm not 100% sure mine remembered the volume setting at first

I think I had to got to
Tools > Preferences > Audio and put a tick in "Always reset audio level to"

click SAVE

then close VLC

next time I started it, it hadn't remembered the setting .. s I went back and removed the tick .. clicked save .. closed VLC

started VLC .. still hadn't remembered, so I opened a file and set the volume in the little triangle bottom right, then closed VLC.

reopened VLC and it had remembered .. now it remembers all the time.

So after much confusion I now dunno if it just started working after me hitting the right combo, or if it was just me doing sommat wrong in the first place .. the upshot is its working now though  :-\

I always set that "Always reset audio level to" thing to 100%.  That and set the video to not show the title on top of videos.  That was the only time the audio thing let me down.

Hm, well I just opened a video and the audio did jump up to 100%.  I guess the key is to not have that "Always reset audio to" setting enabled.  (it's currently disabled)  I never disabled that before, that must have been the issue.  Thanks for the tip.  :)

7 years using VLC religiously and 6 using Linux (off and on) and I still feel like a noob at times.

Oops.  I've been on Peppermint5 for quite a while now, and only just today noticed that Peppermint6 came out in May - what happened?   :-[

Sorry to find there are no torrents up - I'm now downloading direct.  Where are the torrents?  :o

Torrents ARE there ;)

main site:
http://peppermintos.com
click the red button for either 32bit or 64bit

In the pop-open, you'll see the torrent button is bottom right .. just to the right of the direct download button.

or they're linked on this page:
http://peppermintos.com/guide/downloading/

or here they are:-

Download the 32 bit ISO Image via Torrent
and
Download the 64 bit ISO Image via Torrent

Urrrgh!! You did it again. I just got used to P5 after changing from Peppermint Ice. My fave evah OS ::)
Have you noticed I haven't logged in for a while? That's because everything has been so smooth.
Now I have to go through all that stress again. :-\
I must say P6 looks rather nice though.
Ok silly question time and I think I already know the answer.
Can I upgrade from P5 to P6 or do I have to do a fresh install?

If you're happy with Peppermint 5, there's no reason you need to upgrade.  Peppermint 5 has support until 2019, just as Peppermint 6 does.  (same Ubuntu repositories, just some differences on the Peppermint end)  If you don't see any advantages to switching to 6, then don't.  And, no, there's no upgrade path.  It's only available through a fresh installation.

For anyone with low resources that wants a separate audio player.  I'm going to point them towards the DeaDBeeF 0.6.2 ppa I'm using.  It really cranks  8).  I'll still use VLC as my backup audio player if all else fails for sure  ;).

hey there Andy... vlc never plays anything i want it to play... so I am interested in your DeaDBeef ppa?

Hi Spence, sorry mate I almost missed this one.  Yeah, DeaDBeeF is a quality lightweight audio player.  The current version is 0.6.2.  To install the PPA, run the following commands in a terminal window:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:starws-box/deadbeef-playerFollowed by:
Code: [Select]
apt update && apt install deadbeefThat should do the trick  ;).
Backup! Backup! Backup! If you're missing any of these -  you ain't Backed Up!

Cool, DeaDBeeF is very customizable. It's initially just a bit fiddly to set up.  It's well worth the effort though because it looks great and plays nearly anything you throw at it.  DeaDBeeF for its size, really punches way above its weight  ;).
